James Franco's Rejected UCLA Commencement Speech

'Everything is Original' by CSK and Birgit Richter

I really enjoyed this short film made by two friends, director, Christian Svanes Kolding and photographer, Birgit Richter. CSK's film goes behind the scenes to give life to B's portraits of Los Angeles-based housecleaners. They both uncover the somewhat lonely occupation of others. I hope you enjoy the film too!

Ryan McGinness: 50 PARTIES

Today was a good day for mail. We received a handwritten letter from our friend and NYC-based artist, Ryan McGinness inviting us to visit his studio in 2009/2010+ for "50 Parties. 50 Themes. 50 Weeks. In a Row in the Studio. No Sponsors. No Strangers". Included with the note was an additional welcome letter with website login instructions and a list of the first 29 parties' themes.

When we lived in New York City, we were fortunate enough to attend several of Ryan's game nights and gatherings. They were always filled with creatives and interesting doers. Ryan created the 50PARTIES project in response to this void: "to bring back the artist's studio space as an environment for social exchange and revitalize the practice of the artist's studio as salon."  I can only imagine (with anticipation) the potential interactions and conversations while attending one of the themed gatherings.

The more I learned about Ryan's new project, the more it made me miss our friends back east. To remedy this feeling, Silvio and I are going to pick a few dates and party with Manhattan.
I'm looking forward to picking up my Guest Card and joining the fun!

Pete Fowler's A Psychedelic Guide to Monsterism

Monster-artist, Pete Fowler's offering a free mp3 download from Brazilian DJs/producers Monsters at Work for "Magic Morning," off Fowler's new release, A Psychedelic Guide To Monsterism Island.

Well-known for designing the artwork for the Super Furry Animals, Fowler's A Psychedelic Guide to... surrounds his animated Monsterism Island series and contains original compositions, ranging from monstrous rock fry ups to electronic exotica via psychedelic folk and spooky krautrock. The album features Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Jerry Dammers, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain (Peter Brooke-Turner), The Future Sound of London (Brian Dougans, Gary Cobain), Luke Vibert, Circulus, The Advisory Circle and Wolf People to name but a few.

Japanese Dog Squats

So not only is Japan the land of Maru, my all time favorite YouTube animal superstar, but now its got dogs  exercising with their "owners". American pets, you gotta step it up a little!

CatWorkout: PowerLifting: Catlift

Our handsome boy modeling catGodzuki, made his acting debut courtesy of Cat Workout, the Tai Bo of animal kingdom exercising! Thanks to Tara and Sean for giving our four-legged roommate his lucky break... this might be what we need for Disney to pay attention so we can retire and become animal stage moms.

Walrus TV Artist Feature: José Parlá

Contemporary artist and old poker pal, José Parlá "Ease" was recently interviewed by Joey Garfield for Upper Playground/Walrus TV. In this short, but sweet 10 minute documentary, José breaks down his creative process while giving a studio tour, walking around town, and busting out a few dance moves. Immersed in José's explanation of where he draws inspiration from, I found that I missed his twinkling eyes and soothing voice. This New York-based artist is one cool cat. And it's wonderful seeing him experience such well-earned success, so full of joy and rigor.

Look at that. Creative guru and funny man Andrew Gura throwing up another music video for zero budget. He says, "when you're shooting the video in the artist's house, how can it not be a good time?" So looks like this director will work, for fun.

Someday I'll launch my rap career. And I'll have Andrew  shoot my videos. I can see it all now: Andrew trailing behind me in Westminster while I eat banh mi, riding my sting-ray. We're going to blow it up big. Saigon soldier style.
