Open Source Passover Dinner

Gilad and danah hosted an open source Passover dinner at their bungalow in Venice. I learned a lot about the L-rd (aka G-d) from the collective group's POV. It was a very different Seder than the ones I've attended with my family in the past and I gotta say, it's pretty cool to celebrate this way! Thanks to Team BL for hosting a wonderful evening.

Sunday Superbowl Sunday

I am so not a football fan (of the European version either). And even though I paid several years of dues on the sidelines cheering the gridiron on, I just can't get into the Superbowl. Which for my father and brother is sort of like religion. I've been traveling a lot recently and totally forgot about the Superbowl until Mike, my colleague reminded me of his now annual Gluttony Bowl which coincides with the championship game. A bunch of his boys get together and pig out on all sorts of crap while enjoying the pigskin action, no girls allowed. And it's apparently very fun. There are a lot of viewing parties today. Lots of chips and dip. And lots of yelling and screaming echoing throughout our neighborhood.

Since this photo is circulating amongst my peer set today, I thought I'd post it for you to enjoy too. I hope all you New England Patriots and New York Giants fans (yes, I had to Google that) are having an amazing day! And yes, that's a real Superbowl trophy!

Hanukkah Dinner

For the most part, I was raised in a Vietnamese Buddhist family. Even then, my dad was Catholic-schooled during the French occupation of Indochina. My family was adopted by a Georgian Baptist family that married into an Encino Valley Jewish family. Our winter holiday parties are pretty eclectic and fun. This is how we roll. Happy Hanukkah to all!

Robert A. F. Thurman, Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies, Columbia University

The work of Robert A. F. Thurman—renowned scholar, riveting speaker, and author of many books on Tibet, Buddhism, art, and culture—has been instrumental in making Tibetan Buddhism accessible to Western audiences. In 1997 Time magazine selected Prof. Thurman as one of its twenty-five most influential Americans, describing him as a "larger than life scholar-activist destined to convey the dharma, the precious teachings of Siddhartha, from Asia to America." In this lecture, Prof. Thurman will discuss the Buddhist view of art and how it emanates from Buddhahood itself. Specifically, he will examine enlightenment in mind and body, Tantra, mandalas, creation-stage-visualization meditation, and the difference between liberative art and technologies of control.

KAMAU AMU PATTON

Please join us this Saturday Sept 22nd at 8pm as personal histories, enigmatic codes, and visions of the Apocalypse meet in Kamau Patton's new exhibit at Machine Project.

Equal parts religious rite, glam spectacle and public access television show, Kamau's installations bring a personal cosmology to bear on existing folk narratives. For this exhibit at Machine, Kamau's work investigates the media produced of African American cult activity in America, including the 5 Percent Nation, Nuwaubian Nation, and the Black Hebrew Israelites. Also discussed will be the Nature Of The Universe.

Accompanying the opening, our beloved next door neighbors the Echo Park Film Center will be screening dance and music videos from Senegal and Ivory Coast selected from Kamau's collection.

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree!

Christmas ain't what it used to be. It's different. It's way more casual and there's less pressure to do anything in particular. We started the day with a screening of Curse of the Golden Flower, then chowed down on Chinese food at Twin Dragon and finished the night at Eva and Dylan's. It was a wonderful Christmas day filled with friends, food, and fun and I wouldn't ask for anything more. Thanks guys!
