"Only Shallow" by My Bloody Valentine

In honor of the tickets I bought today for My Bloody Valentine's two Santa Monica gigs, I share with you "Only Shallow", classic MBV from the landmark album, Loveless. In 1991, when I was a sophomore at University, this album was on heavy rotation with my suitemates. 17 years later, I can guarantee you, we're all still listening to it.

Calico Horse Riding High

Calico Horse

After a long weekend at the Coachella Valley Music Festival, I thought I'd tire of hearing any more music. I'm a fuddy duddy and to me, all the new stuff sounds the same. My persistent pal Meredith sent me a few songs by Calico Horse to check out and lucky for me, she was right that I'd like them. I'm a sucker for female-fronted indie rock bands.

As I listened to front lady Emily Neveu's endearing cover of Radiohead's "Idioteque" I decided that they were good enough for me. That said, this ain't no cover band. Sample "Father Feed Me" from their upcoming album, "Mirror" and judge for yourself. I hate writing music reviews cause you have to use metaphors to say what you feel and it doesn't really make sense. So maybe if I had to describe them to my buddies, I'd say, "Check out Calico Horse, they're like Feist's softer and sadder cousin but with more earnestness than most of the bands out today."

SF - Radiocl*t + 120 Days + Frankie Chan (05.06.08)

Radiocl*t + 120 Days + Frankie Chan

"Stress" by JUSTICE

Back in 1996, while watching "La Haine" Silvio would tell me, "That's where I'm from". Fast forward 12 years and according to director Romain-Gavras, the Parisian projects are looking rougher and bleaker than ever. Big ups to R-G (can you really be only 26 years old?!) and JUSTICE for another great video!

Thanks to JDF for showing me this video. And for pointing out the "Man Bites Dog" comparison.

“Bids 4 Beats” Online Auction (05.05.08 - 06.01.08)

NextAid and cMarket Present
“Bids 4 Beats” Online Auction
To Benefit Orphans Affected by African AIDS Pandemic
May 5, 2008 – June 1, 2008

NextAid, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit humanitarian organization, and cMarket, the leading provider of charitable online auction services, will once again collaborate to produce the second annual “Bids 4 Beats.” The auction will raise awareness and funds through the global electronic music community in support of NextAid’s mission: to implement sustainable solutions to the challenges facing African children. “Bids 4 Beats” will commence at 8:00am PST on Monday, May 5, 2008 and close at 6:00pm PST on Sunday, June 1, 2008. In 2006, “Bids 4 Beats” raised more than $12,000 from online bidding, resulting in total proceeds of over $24,000 due to bids matched by a private donor. This year, the auction includes items from previous auction supporters, such as Glacéau, who has generously donated a year’s supply of VitaminEnergy drinks, and Rane, a manufacturer of audio gear, as well as new contributors including music recording software developer, Cakewalk, who has donated the award winning virtual instrument, Rapture. Online partners supporting this event include Fusicology.com and Remix Magazine.

To reflect the sustainable element of NextAid’s initiative, the catalog will include donations from leading players in technology and “green” living in addition to items of great interest to the international dance music scene. Biddable items are accessible through this web site: www.nextaid.cmarket.com.

"All I Need" by Radiohead (+ MTV EXIT)

Radiohead and MTV EXIT have produced a music video for "All I Need," from "In Rainbows" to premiere on MTV globally, May 1, 2008.

From the MTV EXIT website: MTV EXIT is a campaign about freedom -- about our rights as human beings to choose where we live, where we work, who our friends are, and who we love. Most of us take these freedoms for granted, but hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world have had these basic human rights taken away. They are victims of trafficking – modern-day slaves -- and criminals have forced, defrauded, or coerced them into various forms of labor, or prostitution.

Other musicians and creatives have donated songs and time to the cause. You can learn more here.

NYC - "The Eroticism of Pedagogy" (05.04.08)

THE EROTICISM OF PEDAGOGY
SUNDAY, MAY 4, 6PM, JUDSON MEMORIAL CHURCH, 55 WASHINGTON SQUARE SOUTH

Ryan Gander & Bedwyr Williams, Liam Gillick & Tirdad Zolgadhr, Adam Pendleton, and Frances Stark will respond to the title of this program, The Eroticism of Pedagogy, by giving performances that subvert (and pervert) the traditional lecture format, exploding ideas of didacticism, information exchange, and the power of the speaker over his/her audience. Musical interludes between each by Vert (Adam Butler) will encourage the audience to move beyond their usual role as complacent listeners.

NYC - Jonathan Lethem and DJ Spooky Book Event (05.02.08)

Jonathan Lethem, author of You Don't Love Me Yet (Vintage)
Paul Miller, aka DJ Spooky, author of Sound Unbound (MIT Press)

Friday, May 2, 7 PM

Two consummate authors of music, language, and culture join forces! Jonathan Lethem (author of Motherless Brooklyn and The Fortress of Solitude) reads from his novel You Don't Love Me Yet, now out in paperback, which sends up the L.A. alternative band scene with a story of overnight fame based on (sort of) stolen lyrics. Conceptual artist, writer and musician Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, presents his book Sound Unbound, a meditation by various artists (including Lethem) on the remix: how music, art, and literature have blurred the lines between what an artist can do and what a composer can create. Join us for an evening of great art and entertainment as well as serious discussion about cross-pollination between artists and genres.

Unless otherwise indicated, all events are free and open to the public - first come, first served. McNally Robinson Booksellers is located at 52 Prince Street between Lafayette and Mulberry. Closest subways are 6 to Spring, R to Prince, or B/D/F/V to Broadway/Lafayette.
