There's no question, videogames have influenced my life. I fondly remember spending many hours with friends and family hovering over the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, and the Commodore 64 growing up. Many allowances and after school hours were spent at the arcade. I often took ideas from the computer to the real world -- completing virtual adventures, outside. I married a game developer over 10 years ago and we've since hosted hundreds of game nights together. We have nearly every major game console launched in the past 30 years gathering dust in our garage. I was once a games journalist. Our cat's name is Atari. Videogame royalties bought our home. We have been hosting an annual post E3 barbecue for the past six years. Some of our best buddies, like Richard (above) we met through the interactive entertainment industry. Without games I'd be without a lot.

Cat Power "Space Oddity" Cover

Dear Music Gods, thank you for Chan Marshall/Cat Power. Her rendition of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" for the Lincoln car commercial is a new classic, but will never be as good as the original. Not dissing or anything, but we all know, "Space Oddity" is the stuff legends are made of. Nor does the song reach the fabled cover status of the Cowboy Junkie's cover of Lou Reed/Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane". That said, it's still a damn good version of an iconic song. If there is a full length recording of the Cat Power cover somewhere, please let me know. I'd like to buy it, stat.

I wasn't quite sure what to make of your new embarrassing LACC appearance. I'm so used to the massive multi-hall experience of the past that when I finally saw you, I was frankly, in disbelief. I kept asking my friend Rob, "Is this it?" and he patiently repeated, "Yes, this is it" but I just couldn't get over how underwhelming you've become! It's like you've forgotten you are a $20,000,000,000+ business. What's with the ghetto ops? I miss the old, loud, obnoxious you. Please get back to your old self soon.

SXSW Makes Same Swag Mistake... Again!

Almost exactly a year ago today, I was overcome by the sight of so many SXSW swag bags. Filled with nearly all junk and very little informational materials, I threw away everything but the canvas bags (great for supermarket visits). I suspect I am not the only one. Maybe collectively, we should demand that next year's materials/collateral be printed on recycled paper. Or maybe we don't need the bags at all. Looks like cNet News is thinking the same thing. What do you say?!
