Dwell on Design at the Los Angeles Convention Center is this weekend, June 26-28! And it's going to be a jam-packed weekend of design, architecture, green activities, fun, and food! Following are some of this weekend's highlights:

Movie Night - Featuring a screening of the Julius Shulman documentary Visual Acoustics and a  Q&A with director, Eric Bricker.

There will be a Mobile Restaurant Row with tacos, BBQ, hot dogs, shaved ice, and architectural ice cream sandwiches by Coolhaus. Are you good with sweet treats and tasty names? If so, enter the contest to invent their next flavor!

Square Meal Sunday - Event devoted to design and food.

Native plant specialist Sara Stopek will lead a guided tour of the park's flowers, trees, shrubs and grasses, followed by a planting project. Recommended for adults and teens age 14-18. An Inconvenient Truth and Beyond: A Plan for Action

A post-election climate change presentation followed by a panel discussion focusing on new federal, state and local advocacy efforts that you can take part in.

On Wednesday November 12 at 6:30pm, Congregation B'nai Jeshurun, Manhattan Community Board 7, New York State Senator Eric Schneiderman, and Environmental Advocates of New York will sponsor a post-election climate change event for New York City residents. An Inconvenient Truth and Beyond: A Plan for Action will feature a presentation by climate change expert, Paul Reale, followed by a panel discussion with environmental advocates. The panel will focus on efforts to pass climate change legislation in both the state and federal government after this month's historic elections.

NYC - Solar1 Volunteer Day (11.08.08)

On Saturday November 8th come and join the staff at Solar1 for a day of volunteering in Stuyvesant Cove Park. Stuyvesant Cove is an all-native sustainably managed plant park on the banks of the East River at 23rd Street.

Work will include raking leaves, cleaning seating areas, fixing temporary fencing, and general park maintenance. The day will start at 9 am with coffee donated by Starbucks. Assignments will be given out and work will begin at about 9:30. The day ends with lunch provided by Stuyvesant Cove Park Association at 12:30.

In conjunction with Citizen Artists Making Emphatic Arguments, Echo Park Film Center will set up their film mobile that runs on veggie oil and will use their bicycle generator powered projector to present us with "Sustainable LA."

Echo Park Film Center is a non-profit media arts organization committed to providing equal and affordable community access to film/video resources via five channels: a neighborhood microcinema, free and nominal cost education programs, a comprehensive film equipment and service retail department, a green-energy mobile cinema & film school, and a touring film festival showcasing local established and emerging filmmakers. We feel it is imperative that more members of marginalized and underserved communities become active, empowered participants in the creation and dissemination of experimental, documentary and narrative film in order to truly reflect the many voices and visions that make up the fabric of contemporary American life. With a special focus on “at risk” neighborhood youth, Echo Park Film Center programs and services are positive catalysts for new opportunities though the medium of film.

Straddling the worlds of art, education, and activism, these three artists discuss working across boundaries for environmental change. Steven Badgett is a founding member of the SIMPARCH collaborative with Matt Lynch. Their work is an exploration of social aspects in art, architecture, and the environment, and their project, Clean Livin’ (2003–ongoing) is a live-work facility that attempts to be a self-sustaining system in terms of waste and energy use. Amy Franceschini is an artist, educator, and founder of Futurefarmers and Free Soil. Her solo and collaborative work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, Karlsruhe, Germany. Nance Klehm is a radical ecologist, designer, urban forager, teacher, and artist. Her solo and collaborative work focuses on creating participatory social ecologies in response to a direct experience of a place. She has shown and taught in Mexico, Australia, England, Scandinavia, the Caribbean, and the United States—including at UCLA.

David Hertz (www.Studioea.com), a well-known architect and lecturer, will join us for a presentation and discussion on using repurposed and sustainable materials to build low impact homes. The Green Renter: A Un Vagon Hermoso en Neuva York: Art & Environment in Small-Town Argentina

Last summer, LoCurativo, a loose collective of artists and organizers from NYC trekked south to work on the Un Vagón Hermoso project. Un Vagón Hermoso is a project to restore two abandoned traincars in the rural town of Mayor Buratovich, Argentina with the intent to reevaluate ideas of community development, and to reactivate the voices and historical visions first begun by the immigrants who founded the town at the turn of the century.

In Buratovich, LoCurativo met 18-year-old activist Emilio Perez Campanelli, a member of the EcoClub Buratovich that initiated the Un Vagón Hermoso project. Together, the two groups organized free art workshops and environmental and social investigations for the community and helped in the continued restoration of the wagons. Join Emilio on his first ever trip to the U.S. (to participate as a global teen leader in Three Dot Dash Foundation's 2008 Just Peace Summit) and LoCurativo members to learn more about Un Vagón Hermoso and to hear about varying experiences in addressing social and environmental problems, utilizing art as a mode for communication and education, and public space reclamation in a developing world context.

SXSW Makes Same Swag Mistake... Again!

Almost exactly a year ago today, I was overcome by the sight of so many SXSW swag bags. Filled with nearly all junk and very little informational materials, I threw away everything but the canvas bags (great for supermarket visits). I suspect I am not the only one. Maybe collectively, we should demand that next year's materials/collateral be printed on recycled paper. Or maybe we don't need the bags at all. Looks like cNet News is thinking the same thing. What do you say?!
