SF - "Apoohcalypse Now" Screening (12.10.08 - 12.16.08)

Apoohcalypse Now

Apoohcalypse Now
Artemio
Wednesday, December 10 to Tuesday, December 16
Screened during gallery hours: Noon-6pm, Tues-Sat

New Langton Arts presents three films/videos selected by artist Julio Cesar Morales. The second is Apoohcalypse Now (2002; 8:26 min.)

Apoohcalypse Now takes Marlon Brando's infamous monologue from Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 film and interprets it through the children's character Winnie the Pooh. The movie conflates two different approaches to aestheticizing popular narratives, creating a mixture of highly stylized visual terms that engage the politics of appropriation while questioning the aesthetics of war and escapism.

SF - "Paperback Dreams" Screening (12.01.08)

Paperback DreamsPAPERBACK DREAMS
screening Paperback Dreams
Monday, December 1 at 7:30 pm

Are independent bookstores still relevant in the 21st century? If you've ever wondered about this question, we invite you to join us for a screening and discussion of a powerful new documentary Paperback Dreams. The film is the story of two landmark independent bookstores - Kepler's and Cody's - going back to the days of the paperback revolution. The film traces the bookstores' history as cultural institutions and explores their community relationships. It also includes interviews with several well known authors, publishers, and booksellers, including Salman Rushdie and Michael Powell.

Paperback Dreams is a co-production of Alex Beckstead, the Independent Television Service (ITVS), and KQED Public Television. Alex lives in San Francisco and is a Booksmith fan. His films have screened at the Sundance Film Festival and Public Television Stations across the US. Alex will join us for Q&A after the film screening.

LA - Swap Meet (11.29.08)

Swap Meet
Piracy - Karaoke - Birthday Partytime... in the FUTURE

Saturday, November 29, 2027
10pm until late

Good news!

The Swap Meet team has finally discovered how to open the temporal portal down at Betalevel!

We’ve of course always known that our basement redoubt was coincident with a major rift in the space-time continuum, but we were never quite sure how to overcome the issues with our maximum power load (remember Bootylevel?) to generate the necessary 1.21 gigawatts to pry it open. However, recent developments in cold fusion technology coming out of Europe, along with our own research into harnessing the power of crystals, got us thinking that maybe we were going about it all in the wrong way...

Long story short: the future is awesome.

And this Saturday, we’re throwing the doors open for a public test, setting the dial to 2027, so we can celebrate Sean’s 50th birthday. Trust us when we say that you won’t want to miss it. This is the Swap Meet your kids will tell you stories about!

25 November 2008 – 10 January 2009

“Maurice Broomfield’s photography captures the real heart of what was a booming but harsh time for the UK. Finding inspiration and creativity in gritty surroundings of every day work is inspiring in itself.” – Sir Paul Smith

In November 2008, HOST gallery presents the first retrospective of the work of British photographer Maurice Broomfield. Maurice Broomfield’s photographs document three decades of post-war heavy industry and urban regeneration in Britain. Broomfield is recognised as one of the first industrial and architectural photographers to use his corporate commissions to make visionary photographic studies of the workers and the environments in which they worked, his motivation stemming from a curiosity in the diversity of industrial occupations.
