R.I.P. E3!

Wait. So next year I have to host the "Missed my Conference BBQ?" Listen up friends. Are you still interested in gathering in May? Let me know. So I can throw something together. Read it to believe it:

Senior industry sources have revealed to Next-Gen.Biz that the E3 industry event, in its present form, has been cancelled for next year and the foreseeable future.

Image The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) shindig has been a staple of game industry life since the mid-1990s. However, we understand the larger exhibitors have jointly decided that the costs of the event do not justify the returns, generally measured in media exposure.

Publishers believe the multi-million dollar budgets would be better spent on more company-focused events that bring attention to their own product lines rather than the industry as a whole.

Well placed sources say the news that larger exhibitors were pulling out had prompted urgent meetings among publishing executives. They decided that, without the support of the larger software publishers and hardware manufacturers, there would be no point in continuing.

ESA president Doug Lowenstein will likely announce the news some time within the next 48 hours, possibly on Monday. It's possible that the ESA will seek to limit the damage by organizing some form of lesser event in May, but it's clear that the days of an industry event attended by all the major publishers, spending big money, are gone.

Calls to ESA staff are not being returned at present.

UPDATE: The official ESA press release!

During the late fifties and early sixties a cinematic genre was established through the genius of casting real life bodybuilders in the roles of figures from Greco Roman mythology. The most famous of all these bodybuilders was Steve Reeves. His first excursion into the realm of Zeus made him an an international star. The film was Le Fatiche di Ercole (1958). When it was released stateside as Hercules in 1960, the film caused a sensation at the box-office and the "peplum" or sword and sandal films became vogue. From this point on nearly two hundred films would follow the formula established in Hercules.

Pedal Envy
June 16, 2006 - 1:27 p.m. PST - Santa Monica, CA

In Los Angeles people have car envy the way New Yorkers have apartment envy. I have neither. I have something far more juvenile. Now that I'm the owner of a modern chopper, I can't help but get a little envious when I see someone cruising on a vintage ride (I want one)!

Cruisers and choppers dominate the beach blocks I live on. And I'm always craning my neck to see who's riding what. Like dogs, bicycles can say a lot about their owners! This Schwinn Sting-Ray looks like it's been repainted but the fact that it's older than mine still makes it super fresh.

LA - "Quality of Life" Opening & After Party (05/26/06)

Hello Graffiti Art & Film Lovers (go see this movie, I will),

The indie film Quality of Life comes to LA for its theatrical debut hot after a successful run (multiple sold-out nights) in NYC. It opens Memorial Day Weekend on Friday, May 26th at Laemmle's Fairfax 3 (on Beverly Blvd.).

Shot on location in San Francisco's Mission District, Quality of Life is not a documentary, but a narrative drama. It sheds light on a clandestine graffiti subculture, with an authentic and riveting story of two young taggers who struggle to maintain their friendship as their lives unravel and the cops close in.

A former at-risk kid himself, director Benjamin Morgan's connection to the underground youth of today accentuates the film’s Cinéma Vérité style. Says Morgan, “I set out to make this film to expose the absurdity of so-called ‘quality of life’ laws. The tough-on-crime political climate has become endemic in the United States. After working in the juvenile justice and mental health fields for over a decade, I became frustrated with the systemic flaws inherent in youth programs...”

adicolor Video: Black

Media maker Saiman Chow created "A Psychedelic, Cartoon-Noir" for the adicolor black campaign. What you see is a freakish Tim Burton'esque Panda and Fish short film; what you feel is a bit of nausea and admiration for such an imagination. Although the content might be infantile, puerile it's not.

adicolor Video: Yellow

The adicolor yellow video, "Even Artificial Life Finds a Way" by Neill Blomkamp is a creative example of techno media. In other words, he rocks the CG without the cheesy. And he apparently knows how to make a small budget go a long way.

April 18, 2006 - 8:39 a.m. PST - Santa Monica, CA

Pre-fab homes have really hit this country by storm (thanks to dwell magazine). So it’s been really interesting watching this prototype Living Homes pre-fab building go up 1.5 blocks from my own home. I’ve been watching contractors pour/build the foundation for the past six months and a few days ago, nearly the whole unit was plopped into place. I have to say, I think architect Ray Kappe did a fine job. The unit itself is lovely, but the concept is striking as stated in their tagline, “Good homes that are good for you.” It’s only appropriate that this showroom house is in Santa Monica; my only wish is that they keep the pre-fab pricing affordable. It’s going to be exciting to follow the progress in the next months to come.

Dwell on this.

Dwell Magazine - May 2006 Dwell Magazine - May 2006

We're in the current issue of dwell magazine (May 2006). Okay so maybe not me. But Silvio, one of our cats, Godzuki, and our kitchen are in four-color for your viewing pleasure. How did it happen? dwell ran a kitchen essay contest in their October/November 2005 issue. We were enjoying our newly renovated kitchen. I felt inspired to write 300 words and submitted the required three pictures. We "won" along with four others. Et voila. I increased the value of our home with these words:

MY KITCHEN

I grew up in a 1500 square foot house with four siblings, two parents, and three kitchens. As immigrants, we lived in a cash-poor, food-rich environment. My mom, a caterer and well-known Vietnamese chef had one kitchen upstairs (electric), one downstairs (gas) and one outside (Vulcan commercial gas range/oven for mom’s stinkiest – but delicious creations). For nearly two decades, Mom prepared a daily home-cooked meal for our family. To this day, we are all very grateful and spoiled by it. If it weren’t for Mom and Dad’s persistence that we try and eat everything these dishes would've never made it into my belly -- beef tongue, Vietnamese shabu-shabu, South American flan, French ragout, and many other unforgettable culinary delights!

It Doesn't Pay to Make Play.

The majority of game developers do not enter the interactive entertainment industry to make bank. Most do it for the love of "play". Considering how big the games industry is today (three commas worth), isn't it odd that not one developer is making a $20,000,000 paycheck per game? Where are the Johnny Depp / Julia Robert equivalents of the games world? If the industry's going Hollywood, then why not really go Hollywood? Did I just say that aloud? Apologies.

The Art of Motion.

The Art of Motion
March 16, 2006 - 8:45 p.m. PST - Venice, CA

WK's art interpreting an athlete without equal, "Motion X Impact" is currently showing at Blu House.

In addition to the exhibit, Janet produced "The Art of Motion" showcasing Los Angeles' superstar architects, artists and designers. We were treated to a lovely dance performance before Peter Frankfurt, Hernan Diaz Alonso and Christian Moeller waxed poetic about their industries and past and future projects. Peter highlighted work for New York's MoMa and discussed the constraints and joys of working with such a prestigious establishment. For me, Christian's dissection of his video installation "Cheese" was the most interesting. Having spent enough years in dance and cheerleading competitions (it's true), I have been forced to smile without warrant and found it fascinating to watch the smile as sport and art. Hernan was the most comical flashing pictures of sunbathers on his installation at PS1 last year (it disgusted him). I left the intimate gathering pleased that it wasn't as pretentious as it might have been and feeling happy that creativity is alive and kicking.

The night ended at our home with Los Angeles' next generation of great architects, artists and designers discussing what we had all just experienced. The future looks promising!

Mr. Han's a consultant to NYU's computer science department. Anyone know him?! I want to ask him what he's going to do with this rad "graphical interaction surface"? Is he taking it to market? Entertainment, technology and art -- the special combo I've been looking for. Hang it on a wall or use it as a dining table surface, I don't care...just make it commercially available!

If this isn't entertaining, you are 1) living in 1984, 2) beyond jaded, or 3) developing a competitor product.

If you are doing #3, holler! And apologies if you saw this like, more than a week ago.

I got me some Porous Walker action.

Porouscontibutiontokoop

I bought myself a Porous Walker action figure. It'll have to do battle against our Metal Gear Solid guys. There are only a few left so grab one while you can! It'll only put you out $5.00 so you don't even have to think about it. If you miss out on this opportunity, look to grab some original crap for $10.00. Porous' artwork will make anyone feel warm and fuzzy during the winter holidays.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Experimental Gameplay Workshop

We've just posted the Call for Participation for Experimental Gameplay 2006. http://experimental-gameplay.org

The Experimental Gameplay Workshop is a mini-conference at the GDC where we showcase new, experimental game designs. If you're working on new and interesting gameplay, check out the web site and submit your work. Also, please forward this announcement to other game designers -- in the past, we've gotten in touch with some very interesting projects solely by word of mouth, and those projects went on to get good exposure at the conference.

Thanks, everyone. Let us know if you have any questions about the CFP, comments or suggestions about previous years' sessions, or anything like that.

A Pack of Wild Dogs.

I know, you have been tossing and turning at night because you are wondering, how can someone who loves Keith Haring so much not yet mention Blik's recent addition of Haring's work to their collection? Well, you can sleep easy now dear readers. Here's the post:

Blik + Haring

Keith Haring's commodification-of-art boutique, the Pop Shop is now closed, but you can still enjoy Haring's work, even temporarily by adding Blik-Haring wall decals to your super boring environment. Ranging from $18 to $45, it's cheaper than repainting the media room and it's yours to take when you move. The options are great, but I'm especially loving the pack of Haring dogs. Add color. Add life. Long live Keith Haring.

Xbox 360 Live!

Xbox 360 Launch Party

For the last two nights I have been hauling ass out to the Mojave Desert (aka Palmdale, CA) for the exclusive Xbox 360 "Zero Hour" Launch Party; a ginormous marketing event for gamers-only. Omni-present flourescent green lights casted an eerie glow on everything; apropos of the very Microsoft-branded environment.

I arrived at the event at 7:45 PM this evening...two and a half hours after we'd left Santa Monica. Unbeknownst to me, Xbox 360 sales ended at 7:00 PM. I wasn't about to let the mal-information get me down. I knew I was walking home with an Xbox 360 so I had to start channeling the good vibes! According to event organizers, the registers had to be shut down to prep for the simultaneous east and west coast launch (midnight EST, 9:00 p.m. PST). Fair enough.

A little stressed from my long commute (Sunday night only took us an hour) and without receipts in hand, I knew I better get talking. So I talked to heads at Xbox, I talked to heads at Edelman PR, and I talked to heads at Best Buy (the on-site distributor). They all pointed me in different directions. Near the end of the night, I could see 500+ unsold Xbox 360s taunting me from the back of the trucks. I knew by evening's end that two would be mine.

future present.

sony tiles

dear mr. spielberg,

you are a visionary and great sentimental storyteller. and you believe in aliens. i am not so powerful but like yourself, i do believe that technology will remain a powerful force in the future. oh, and i believe in e.t. too. i'm convinced your senior friends at sony let you sneak peek this incredible technology from their computer science labs. i'm no user interface designer but i sure appreciated the tech demo (it's a doozy at 30 megs but worth the download). what i see looks unreal, but it appears legit.

jun rekimoto, director of the interaction lab looks real too -- although younger than i would've guessed. his interests are in "designing a new human computer interaction style for highly portable computers, that will be situation-aware and assistance-oriented rather than command oriented." before 2010, he expects, "that such computers will be as commonplace as today's Walkmans, electronic hearing aids, eyeglasses, and wristwatches."

so what do you think? the future is now, huh? i can't wait!

all my best,
hustler

p.s. with "war of the worlds", were you trying to tell us you saw something else behind closed doors?

p.p.s. sony, i would like to visit your laboratories. i have a blockbuster sci fi screenplay to squeeze out too.

Nintendo Time.

Every other day somebody asks me, "What time is it?" None of us wear watches much anymore since we all rock the mobile phones, yet nobody really wants to pull out their phone when we need to know what time it is! So I give you, gamers, a fun solution:

DK watch Zelda watch

These playable retro Nintendo watches are available at fredflare for $60. So while you wait in line for War of the Worlds, go old school. Laugh at your friends who pull out the PSP or DS. I mean, come on, they're so brand new heavy school.

the japanese love the french. they do. i asked natives why this was and they said the french make everything more sophisticated and sexy. combining french joie de vivre and japanese whimsy, marchand de legumes (green grocer), a select shop in japan with one outlet in the states (new york city) has unleased several of their own creative designs. i especially favor these items:

tote bag door mat portable vacuum

if you missed the talking watches and alarm clocks by marchand de legumes and live nowhere near new york city, they can be purchased online at fred flare. marchand de legumes is located at 252 elizabeth street between prince and houston . 212-965-1954.
