Eames Stamps: First Day of Issue Recap

June 17, 2008 - 11:37 a.m. - Santa Monica, CA

I had the pleasure of attending the First Date of Issue for a new pane of stamps by the United States Postal Service celebrating the designs of Charles and Ray Eames. It was a very exciting day filled with media, friends of the organization, Eames enthusiasts, and many family members.

I was honored to be present on such a momentous occasion. The Eames family is kind, sincere, and determined to keep the design duo's history alive. By way of the internet I've become friends with Eames Demetrios and have learned so much about the foundation's mission through his infectious personality. Should you ever find an opportunity to meet an Eames org champion, they'll most likely thank you for your continued support and appreciation of the family legacy.

Congratulations to the Eames family for the historical milestone! Share in the joyous occasion here:

The Japanese design t-shirt store graniph, is hosting the second international t-shirts design award contest from the February 1, 2008 to March 31, 2008. All young artists, designers, illustrators and photographers are welcomed to send their ideas for t-shirt designs. Everyone is welcomed to apply regardless of age, gender or artistic background. The winners will receive cash prizes, be promoted on the graniph website and the international press and have their design printed on a graniph tee!

We had a video show at Doug Lussenhop's comedy night in LA and our cinematic alchemy turned out pretty well. We're going to play this show in Chicago AND put out a call for work.

The Heaven screening series showcases shortform experimental work. For this show we are looking for short form experimental comedy videos.

Remembering Nike's "Art of Speed" The Shortest Race

In January of 2004, I competed in Nike's "Art of Speed", The Shortest Race. The foot race was 39.9 inches from start to finish! That day was most excellent day and a highlight of the cool things one gets to do while living in Manhattan (thanks again, Honest). Aside from messing around all day with my peeps, I made some solid friends including before-then-TED-prize-winner, Cameron Sinclair and artist, Max Fenton. I discovered this video on YouTube while Googling the race for Facebook purposes. I heart the internets!

CREEM: America's Only Rock 'N' Roll Magazine

From 1969 to 1988, CREEM produced celebrated writers, honored rock gods, and wrote about rock music like no other. The namesake book, CREEM: America's Only Rock 'N' Roll Magazine is the anthology for all the music that mattered in those ear-shattering decades. Jam-packed with selected interviews and photographs, turning the pages of CREEM is like delving into a music encyclopedia of pop culture. Before Bowie, Iggy, and Lou were icons, they were in CREEM. Before MTV’s ‘Cribs: Whips, Rides, & Dubs’ there was CREEM’s “Star’s Cars”. Before he was really famous, Cameron Crowe was typing for CREEM.

Thanks to video games, anyone today can be a Guitar Hero or Rock Band. But we all know, nothing beats the real deal. And thank CREEM for being there to record the stuff that legends are made of. To all the fans, this book's for you.

"Work it Out" B-side.

Okay so Joey Garfield's still feeling pretty, pretty good about his MTV award nomination and winning the Emerging Director award at Swerve Fest. To celebrate, Joey's released the "B-side" of his clever music video for RJD2's "Work it Out".

I hope Joey takes home another prize for something soon 'cause when that man wins, he motors on about how good "it" feels. Like, from the heart. And it's kind of sweet.

Swerve Festival 1-Hour Special Screening.

November 9, 2007 - 11:35 p.m. - Santa Monica, CA

A lot of friends were involved with the inaugural film, music, and art festival, Swerve Fest. I was chuffed to participate on the jury. And a lot of talented peers showcased their work to the public.

We hosted a dinner and screening of the SwerveFest 1-Hour Special and spent part of the night pointing to our telly, laughing at insane misspellings of names of peeps we knew. Fuel TV's insistence on spelling names phonetically was pretty damn hilarious. Winner of the grossest name butchering goes to Geoff McFetridge! Congrats to all!

UPDATE: The fine folks at Fuel TV have corrected the misspellings of names and will be airing the special again on the following dates:

SCION SEARCHES FOR THE BEST HYPE MAN IN NATIONAL CONTEST

Scion has set its sites on discovering the nation’s best talent again with the Scion Hype Man Contest. The back-up MC and host, commonly referred to as the Hype Man, is one of the most underestimated elements of live hip-hop. Scion’s Hype Man Contest is aimed at discovering the quintessential rhyme spitting master of ceremonies!

“Scion feels incredibly fortunate to continue its leadership in creating new platforms for discovering rare and exceptional talent in these creative environments,” said Jeri Yoshizu, Scion sales and promotions manager. “With Scion Hype Man, we’re very excited to be on the forefront of unveiling America’s next party host.”

Aspiring and recognized Hype Men alike will have between August 1 and September 28 to submit a DVD showcasing their talent. The competition will be narrowed down to thirty finalists and then ten finalists. Each competitor will be sent to one of three contest markets, which include Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles in mid October 2007 to participate in a program that encompasses numerous rounds of Hype Man performances.

EARLY DEADLINE FOR SCREENPLAY CONTEST APPROACHES

The early deadline for American Zoetrope’s Annual Screenplay Contest is August 1 ($35). The final deadline is September 4 ($50). Judge Francis Ford Coppola will award the $5,000 Grand Prize, and the winner’s and ten finalists’ scripts will be considered for option and development by more than a dozen major production companies, including American Zoetrope. Those writers will also be considered for representation by ICM, UTA, Paradigm, The Gersh Agency, William Morris Independent, CAA, and The Firm. Call for Submissions: Space Available Cover Contest.

ISM: a community project, a non-profit arts organization based in Long Beach but heard worldwide, is again proving that art is a democratic institution for all by launching the “Space Available Cover Contest”. Jumping off with its Summer Issue (out now at select retailers, galleries, finer boutiques and online @ www.ISMcommunity.org), this contest is giving all artists, both emerging and established alike, equal chance to be the cover artist for the Autumn 2007 Issue.

To help judge the entries, ISM: a community project has assembled a group of some of the most definitive voices in the arts world. JOYCE CAROL OATES JUDGES SHORT FICTION CONTEST

The 2007 Zoetrope: All-Story Short Fiction Contest is open for submissions. The deadline is October 1, 2007. National Book Award-winner Joyce Carol Oates will judge and award the first prize of $1,000, the second prize of $500, and the third prize of $250. The prizewinners and seven finalists will be considered for representation by the William Morris Agency, ICM, Regal Literary, the Elaine Markson Literary Agency, Inkwell Management, Sterling Lord Literistic, and the Georges Borchardt Literary Agency. Last year’s winning story, “A Crisis for Mr. Lion” by William Preston, was published in a special online supplement to the Spring 2007 issue.
