You can usually find Twinkie selling her goods at Renegade San Francisco, where she resides, and I've heard she is just as fun and sweet as her projects look. Chen Chieh-jen's powerful and haunting body of films examines the history of Taiwan within the larger context of globalization. On exhibition at REDCAT July 9, 2010 through September 5, 2010, Chen presents a newly commissioned work entitled Empire's Borders II - Western Enterprises, Inc. Inspired by his own difficulties in acquiring a visa to enter the United States, this multimedia video installation explores ideas of borders and boundaries within a shifting geopolitical landscape while also reflecting on the history of Taiwan-U.S. relations.

LA - Game Night with Gaijin Games (06.14.10)

In conjunction with the Attract Mode videogame culture shop and LA Game Space, Giant Robot is proud to host Game Night, a pre-E3 party putting a spotlight on Gaijin Games. Gaijin Games is a small indie studio from Santa Cruz, CA that makes the Bit.Trip series of retro pixelated games for the Wii. Their work will be projected on the side of the building and the actual developers will be in attendance to hang out and play with fans. There will also be Bit.Trip-themed food available at gr/eats.

Game Night is a new event that will be take place at GR2 every two months. Each evening will feature a different developer and its games in a relaxed, community-building setting. Because of the onset of E3, many members of the videogame industry are expected to attend the inaugural gathering, which will be a great opportunity for the game-playing public since most parties related to the Electronic Entertainment Expo are invitation-only.

Giant Robot was born as a Los Angeles-based magazine about Asian, Asian-American, and new hybrid culture in 1994, but has evolved into a full-service pop culture provider with shops and galleries in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City, as well as an online equivalent.

Two of the hardest working men, Leonard McGurr aka Futura and jeffstaple sit down for a tête-à-tête. Favorite Futura quote, "I haven't survived this long by being an asshole or irresponsible. So just my contribution and what I would perceive to be is the perception people have of me, maybe not my work because that's objective.  But in the people that have gotten to know me as a person. They probably think I'm a decent person. And I like to think I'm a decent person. You know what I mean? So, so, if I've made a success of myself, it hasn't been because I sold out. It's just been because I'm ultimately talented."

LA - Luke Chueh's "Beginnings / Endings (And Other Worthless Epiphanies)" (05.08.10 - 05.29.10)

CoproGallery  presents Luke Chueh's "Beginnings / Endings (And Other Worthless Epiphanies)" which bears all the stylistic stamps Chueh's fans have come to love. Employing minimal color schemes, simple animal characters, and a seemingly endless suite of ill-fated situations, Chueh balances cute with brute, perched on the fine line between comic and tragic.

Chueh studied graphic design at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obipso where he earned a BS in Art & Design (Graphic Design concentration). Employed by the Ernie Ball Company, he worked in-house as designer/illustrator creating award-winning designs, and was featured in the design annuals of Communication Arts and Print Magazine. As if this were not enough, Chueh also created, produced, wrote, designed, edited and published "E.X.P.", a 'zine dedicated to the "Intelligent Dance Music (IDM)" genre. In 2003, Chueh moved to Los Angeles to further pursue a career in design, only to join the ranks of the under-employed. He resorted to painting as a way to keep both his edge and his sanity. When the Los Angeles underground art show, Cannibal Flower, invited him to exhibit at their monthly events, Chueh began his ascent into the LA art scene. Chueh has since established himself as the arbiter of disarmingly benign menace. Ever the designer, Chueh also has a new toy coming out through Munky King.

So far, almost all space programs have been led by governments, usually as part of their military programs. Very seldom were these initiatives developed by amateurs. After three years of research and one year of experience as a satellite engineer, Song Hojun has found that it is possible to launch and operate a personal satellite at a fairly reasonable price. In addition, he has for the past five years been exploring ways to integrate the concept of a personal satellite project into cultural contexts and into his artistic practice.

All the satellite-related systems (except for the rocket to launch it) are DIY programs –- designed so that regular people may also have the chance of developing and eventually launching their own.

Join us (last minute!) this Sunday April 25th at 5pm for a presentation by Song, who will have his satellite with him for showing.
