Michael Sorkin is Principal of Michael Sorkin Studio, New York, and Distinguished Professor of Architecture and Director of the Graduate Program in Urban Design at CCNY. The Michael Sorkin Studio is devoted to both practical and theoretical projects at all scales with a special interest in the city and in green architecture.

Copenhagen's Bike-Friendly Culture

Check out this video of Copenhagen's kick ass bike culture/lanes/way-of-living by Street Films! I wish every city in the world would take the initiative to implement the infrastructure needed for such bike-friendly living. Aside from the obvious benefits to society, bicycling more would certainly also help reduce obesity and  air and noise pollution. [Thanks @lostart]

Frances Anderton, host of DnA on KCRW and Los Angeles editor of Dwell, will be in conversation with Moss, director of SCI-Arc and principal of Eric Owen Moss Architects, about his career and the work represented in the book.
 
The discussion will be followed by a reception and book signing. Book sales will be hosted by Hennessey & Ingalls; copies purchased at the event will receive a 10% discount.

Andrew Holder: Drop It Like It's Fake: Architecture and the Necessity of Faux Science

Along with Claus Freyinger, Andrew Holder has been co-principal at the Los Angeles Design Group (LADG) in Hollywood, California since 2007. The LADG is a firm specializing in contemporary design at all scales, with particular expertise in a materialist approach to design problems, exploiting the properties of pragmatic building materials to create environments and objects that are tailored to generate a specific sensory experience.

Artist-In-Residence at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at UCSB

Jean-Pierre Hébert (b. 1939 in Calais, France) lives and works in Santa Barbara. From the 70s on, he has pioneered computational drawing and focuses on defining algorithmic drawing processes and translating them into images in traditional and new media. He has been artist-in-residence at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of California, Santa Barbara since 2003, and has been awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation award in 2006. 'Architecture & Influence' is one of two new films produced for the Philip Johnson Glass House Oral History Project.  It features interviews with friends of Philip Johnson including starchitects and other creatives such as Robert A.M. Stern, Charles Gwathmey, Michael Graves, Vincent Scully, Richard Rogers, Norman Foster and Jaquelin T. Robertson.

Elle Decor profiled musician John Mayer's Manhattan home. And it's a yawn. Following is their description of what you see above:

In the living area, the sofa, armchairs, lamps, cocktail table, and handknotted silk rug are all by Armani/Casa; the stool, made of woven water hyacinth, is from Apartment 48, and the velvet pillows are from ABC Carpet & Home.

OMFG... how boring! How can a young guy like John have the taste of a 72 year old Japanese woman? I'm not saying his home is ugly. It just doesn't fly for a young rock star's apartment. Someone's been living in hotel rooms for too long (this is a favored aesthetic of the MTV Cribs set). Nice guitar but it's hard to believe it rests there all the time. Really?!

Am I the only person who caught the solo interesting piece in the room?! Hello, editors! Thanks for the obvious shout out to Andy Warhol in the bedroom, but like, there's a kick ass Ryan McGinness piece hanging on the wall and it's getting no love from you decorator zombies. John, whomever picked up that piece for you should've decorated the rest of your home.

The Sundown Salon Unfolding Archive will be unveiled at the Schindler House on Saturday, June 20, 4-7 p.m. Published by Evil Twin Publications, The Sundown Salon Unfolding Archive is a comprehensive archive and account of the Sundown Salon series that ran from spring 2001 through fall 2006 in the home of Los Angeles artist Fritz Haeg.

This event at the MAK Center will be accompanied by performances and activities led by local artists.

'Reef', an interactive installation at Storefront for Art and Architecture by LA-based architects Rob Ley and Joshua Stein, investigates the role emerging material technology can play in the sensitive reprogramming of architectural and public space. Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs), a category of metals that change shape according to temperature, offer the possibility of efficient, fluid movement without the mechanized motion of earlier technologies.
