Greetings from the brand-spanking-new Lomography Gallery Store Santa Monica!
 
That’s right, we’re adding a younger sibling to the Lomographic family in Los Angeles County… due date of Thursday, October 6, 2011.  We would love if you were able to attend, as well as help spread this newsflash within the Los Angeles and Santa Monica community.  We hope to create a dwelling for California residents to come together, learn about photography and participate in fabulous meet-ups!
 
We’re kicking things off with a party which is open to the public and will include some seriously awesome musical and visual entertainment!  We'll also serve California champagne, wine and local artisanal beers, with food catered by our neighbors at Le Pain Quotidien and Mini Cupcakes from Sprinkles!

On the Destruction of the Crystal Palace (Museum On Fire)

For the first of her Engagement Party works, Liz Glynn will construct and then burn a steel frame structure combining architectural features of the Crystal Palace with that of MOCA's own facade. Destroying the model offsite, Glynn will bring its charred remains to MOCA, so that visitors may sift through the ruins; she will also project a film of the burning in MOCA's ARCO Court. The evening will be organized into three "movements," each signaled by a changing musical score composed specifically for the project by experimental percussionist Corey Fogel.

London - Michael Muller & Sage Vaughn's "Opposing Instincts" (10.06.11 - 10.29.11)

‘Opposing Instincts’ is naturalist art as you’ve never seen it before. Lazarides gallery group favourite Sage Vaughn has painted directly on to underwater photographs of great white sharks taken by his surf buddy, glossy magazine stalwart Michael Muller. Sage’s elegant acrylics and Michael’s apex predators are an ideal union of opposites, resulting in some world-beating imagery.

In classic NYC Subway Graffiti lore, a "King" is one who has achieved the most recognition for not only excellence in style but for the mark they have made on the culture. For over thirty years these "3 Kings" have been at the top of the game. Their history-making rise to international prominence from the subway tunnels of New York City was recently chronicled in MOCA's "Art In The Streets" exhibition. At Subliminal Projects they will be presenting their contemporary work created exclusively for this exhibition along with classic pieces. Davi Russo was born in New York City in 1978 and studied film editing at the School of Visual Arts and is currently working as a photographer and director. He shot the end title photomontage sequence to the Oscar nominated film, Blue Valentine, and most recently directed the hour long documentary, Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside. Russo self published his first monograph, Just a Mouthful (2006) and has exhibited work at 798 Gallery, Beijing; Diesel Gallery, Hong Kong; and Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery, New York. Turns (2011) his second self published monograph, will be released in conjunction with his first solo exhibition at Munch Gallery.

Born Lucien Ginsburg to Russian-Jewish parents, Gainsbourg evolves from a precocious child in Nazi-occupied Paris, to small-time jazz musician and finally international pop superstar. Along the way, he romances many of the era’s most beautiful women, including Juliette Greco (Anna Mouglalis), Brigitte Bardot (Laetitia Casta) and Jane Birkin (Lucy Gordon). With a witty surrealistic style and a soundtrack showcasing many of the musician’s greatest hits, the film is a sensual delight and a quintessential time capsule of the eras he enjoyed.

Western Project is proud to present Los Angeles artist Chad Robertson with a new group of paintings entitled, Disparate Collectives. Following his previous Mash-Up works, the artist continues his interest in music and implied narratives. Looking to create a 'visual piece of music', Robertson uses imagery from his travels around the globe, a picture from the news that caught his attention, old photographs, etc. He writes:  The images become the words of a lyric or the sentence. It sets the scenario for the viewer to put together a story, but it's important that it is their story. Robertson holds up a 'mirror' of events and objects in the world around us; layering political events, natural disasters, intimate physicality and the minutia of life. He presents a cacophony of experience as a frozen moment, as to witness; capturing the notion of evolving histories, and the ever changing, growing and moving world around us. Influenced by De Kooning and Rauschenberg's ideas of 'all-overness', and particularly Rauschenberg's abandonment of pictorial hierarchy, Robertson treats his images equally, employing a similar layering and patterning to imply the interconnectedness of events occurring. It is a conceptual as well as philosophical view: no hierarchy equals all happening, all together.

Robertson: My experience going to Africa and my ongoing personal connections that I have there now really bring the continent into the first world in my mind. It shares a space in my conscious now, therefore sharing space in my paintings.

As our world is more technologically connected than any time in human history, his paintings imply the shift in awareness of possibilities, the multiple layers of consciousness existing, and the simultaneity of the internal and external worlds. As Rauschenberg's later works developed analogies between visual arts and music, Robertson's narratives are visual songs of contemporary life: operatic, reflective and universal.

Chad Robertson has exhibited previously in Munich, Stockholm, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, and at Sixspace in Los Angeles.
