Michael Lyons Wier noted, “Along with our art program, we also strive to support the community by providing a platform that serves as a conduit between the art world and social causes. Foox’s exhibition is an excellent example of our efforts, as the show will combine his artwork, his Organ Donor vinyl toy collectibles with a proportion of the proceeds donated to the New York Organ Donor Network.”
FOOX most recently came to prominence through his ORGAN DONOR vinyl toys and artistic pranks, including The Art of Walk, a marching "art protest" into prominent art galleries around New York City. Working closely with Paper magazine, FOOX debuted his "SCARY MONEY" series at the 2008 Paper Magazine Nightlife Awards, where he presented DJ and music aficionado Mark Ronson with a special FOOX collector’s edition skate deck.
For this exhibition, FOOX has invited five participating artists Liza Corbett, John Dunivant, Kooks Malooks, Audrey Pongracz, and Ron Zakrin from the Detroit based art collective, 323 East, to pay homage and customize their own original Organ Donor vinyl toy collectable to display alongside their artwork.
Born in South Africa and raised in New Zealand, FOOX launched his career by drawing “machine guns and airplanes” from a young age. Leaving his profession as a patent litigator in New York, FOOX followed his dream of creating passionate pieces of art, reflecting the nexus between pop culture and spirituality. FOOX’s vinyl toys and designs can be found at prestigious emporiums such as the UCCA Design Store in Beijing, China, and the Fort Worth Modern Art Museum Design Store in Texas.
As an independent toy designer and artist, FOOX is one of the few outside producers to be sold through Kidrobot, Munky King, Poptopia, Ultrapop, Yellow Rat Bastard, among others.
FOOX has been featured in Surface, Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, Paper Magazine, and various urban culture publications and blogs including Wired Blog, NotCot and BoingBoing. His other projects include an upcoming iPhone app (bringing his drawings to life), a Wii game, a new line of vinyl toys (known as “The Elemental Badgers”), as well as a special artistic collaboration with Red Bull in their Soho loft space in New York City.
Proceeds from this exhibition will benefit the New York Organ Donor Network (www.donatelifeny.org/).
