Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery is pleased to present its second solo exhibition of Mitzi Pederson: You’ll Know, running from January 15th through February 27th, 2010. An opening reception will be held on Friday, January 15th from 6-8 pm.
Bent, balanced, stacked and suspended, Pederson’s sculptures function as drawing in space, while pushing the strength and pliability of material. Drawing and collage extend the artist’s experiments with form and completion.
Pederson‘s recent work subverts expectation: as we approach a sculpture, it begins to suggest a shape, yet at a particular point our perception shifts. Closed forms and support structures open into free space, eluding definitive resolution. By allowing the qualities of each material to help determine a work’s form and means of support, individual elements such as warped wood and thread take on a life of their own. With these delicate tensile constructions, Pederson creates works that are questions rather than statements, investigating their own potential energy and permanence.
Mitzi Pederson was born in 1976 in Stuart, Florida. She received a B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1999. In 2004 she completed an M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing at the California College of the Arts. She has had solo exhibitions at World Class Boxing, Miami, FL, Hammer Projects, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, White Columns, New York, and Ratio 3, San Francisco. Recent group exhibitions include New York Minute, MACRO FUTURE, Rome (2009), Quiet Revolution, Milton Keynes Gallery and Harris Museum, Preston, UK (2009), Tony Feher, Allison Miller and Mitzi Pederson, ACME, Los Angeles (2009), The Approach (two-person with Lotte Gertz), London (2009), No Information Available, Gladstone Gallery, Brussels (2008), Now You See It, Aspen Art Museum (2008), Constraction, Deitch Projects, New York (2008), and the 2008 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
