As part of the Eye on the Strand Photo Contest Series, Aperture is pleased to announce a special talk and book signing with Hank Willis Thomas. Willis Thomas will discuss the work in his recently published first monograph, Pitch Blackness (Aperture), featuring his highly provocative series B®ANDED, which addresses the commodification of African-American male identity. With his characteristic pointedness and dark humor informed by his personal experiences, Hank Willis Thomas is one of the most compelling emerging artists working today. He is the recipient of the first Aperture West Book Prize. An exhibition titled Pitch Blackness, featuring all new work, will open at Jack Shainman Gallery, February 12, 2009.
Eye on the Strand is a photography contest co-hosted by the Strand, Aperture, and Pratt Institute; pictures of the legendary bookstore should be submitted by February 27, 2009.
