Electric Works presents The Airport Project
New collaborative work by Amanda Hughen and Jennifer Starkweather
January 9 – February 28, 2009
Opening Reception January 9, 6-8 PM
Electric Works is pleased to announce "The Airport Project” featuring collaborative work by Amanda Hughen and Jennifer Starkweather as well as original solo work by each artist. Starkweather and Hughen create collaborative artworks that explore the layers, complexities, and patterns that comprise a specific geographic location using both current and historic information, photographs, maps, and other data.
The resulting artworks represent unique forms and patterns derived from constructed systems and natural movements around a specific locus. “The Airport Project” is a new collaborative series of six prints in which the artists isolate and overlap patterns and systems found in seven airports. Each airport is the subject of an artwork — Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta (ATL), John F. Kennedy (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA) — with the exception of the San Francisco and Oakland (SFO/OAK) airports which were combined to create a single piece.
The original work, which travels back and forth from one artist’s studio to the other, receives new marks upon each visit. On one layer, Starkweather drew with ink, graphite and gouache to articulate the individual routes of airlines that originate from each airport. On additional layers, Hughen mapped the various services available at each terminal; various airline departures; and color systems used for airport parking garages. She also created solid color shapes out of paper based on the runways and highways surrounding each airport.
Electric Works devotees will remember Hughen and Starkweather's collaboration in doing a project for the San Francisco Arts Commission in 2007. The artist team created six different maps for the San Francisco Bay Area examining areas of interest from BART maps, the communter routes, to bicycle rack locations.
