GIFTLAND IX
BLACK FRIDAY
Exhibition on view from November 28 – December 23rd
Curated by Olivia Shao and Jay Sanders
Opening Reception begins on November 28, 6:00 AM
Printed Matter is happy to announce the return of its annual holiday show GIFTLAND. This is the ninth year for the group exhibition, which features affordable and cheap art to counter the gross and over-indulgent consumerism that typifies the holiday season. Please join us for our early morning opening on November 28 at 6:00 AM! Printed Matter is located 195 Tenth Avenue in New York City.
If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! This year, the show’s curator’s Olivia Shao and Jay Sanders have decided to adopt the corporate strategies of large chain stores—targeted displays, opening day discounts and giveaways, gift certificates, etc—to attract customers and onlookers, alike. Works by a wide array of artists, some of it commissioned particularly for the exhibition, will be available through a variety of curated themes, such as “Self Help for the Avant Garde,” “Mystery Gifts (fool-proof pre-wrapped presents),” “Printed Matter’s Top Ten,” and “Advent Calendar (multiples and books perfect for counting down the days),” among others.
In keeping with the theme of Black Friday, typically the biggest shopping day of the year, Printed Matter will open its doors at 6:00 AM. The first ten people in the door will receive door prizes and Printed Matter will be offering discounts up to 40% until 11:00 AM. Come early and get all your holiday shopping done in one fell swoop! Pancakes will be served along with the typical offerings of an opening: beer, wine, and tonic water.
Highlights include a large selection of out of print works by Hanuman Books, a selection of signed Vito Accconci rarities, Paul Thek’s Documents 2 & 3 slipcase books, Susan Cianciolo products, a Toby Webster project, avant garde hard drives by No Input Books, artists’ placemats, original Situationist pamphlets, build-your-own wall clocks, signed posters by Marian Zazeela and La Monte Young, Parkett multiples, and much more.
