Splash: Summer Gallery Selections 2008
July 12 – August 2, 2008
Opening Reception : Saturday, July 12, 6-9pm
Draw aside summer's sweltering curtain and get refreshed by sublime works from Cerasoli Gallery's selected artists. A thoughtful and imaginative undercurrent runs through 'Splash: Summer Gallery Selections 2008,' curated by Cerasoli Gallery director Freddi Cerasoli. The exhibit features contemporary work in varied media by over twenty diverse, talented, emerging and established artists. The works on view in 'Splash' inspire and surprise while exploring a spectrum of ideas with a summer theme.
In Lena Wolff's fantastical drawings, which combine folk and textile traditions such as drawing, sewing, paper-cut and collage, the concentrical rings of confetti paper circles resemble the blazing solstice sun. Doused in the saturated tones of a heat wave, Josh Peter’s painting, titled 'Zodiac', depicts a summer scene of a convertible car cruising, unwittingly, beneath the crimson shadow of the Zodiac murders. Jennifer Davis's colorfully mute acrylic and graphite on panel drawings are mirage-like visions transpiring within tiny nooks and dells in Paradise. Michele Carlson's ink on paper drawings unfurls myriad anecdotal tableaux steeped in contemporary American culture. David O’Brien’s intellectual ink and color pencil drawings pulsate with the energy of a blooming biosphere. Ria Brodell's otherworldly drawings reveal contradictory, private landscapes as vast as they are detailed. The artists exhibited in 'Splash' seek to create new, sublime images even as they struggle over ideas about the nature of beauty and reach beyond outmoded, acceptable forms of expression.
