Contradictions and Complexities: Contemporary Art from India will open simultaneously at d.e.n. contemporary art and Western Project in Culver City. The shows will provide an introduction to the fertile and vibrant contemporary art scene happening in India today. The shows will include six artists ranging in age from 30 to 65, working in a wide variety of media. All of the artists skillfully combine imagery and references to traditional Indian culture with more contemporary concerns, negotiating the slippery terrains of identity, globalization and cultural inheritance.
The exhibitions are curated by Patricia Hamilton, former owner of Hamilton Gallery in New York and currently a private dealer in Los Angeles, and Peter Nagy, director of Gallery Nature Morte in New Delhi and former director of Nature Morte in New York’s East Village.
The panel discussion, Indian Art Today, on Sunday June 22nd, 3 pm at d.e.n. contemporary art
will feature Peter Nagy and Betty Seid, who recently curated the much-applauded New Narratives: Contemporary Art From India, which opened at the Chicago Cultural Center and is currently on view at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ.
