COMMON GROUND – PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT A. NELSON
Opening this Friday, June 6 at another year in LA is a rare treat.
This will be the first public viewing of a nine year photography project by the legendary underground filmmaker, Robert A. Nelson. Known for his humorous and intriguing movies from the 1960’s like Oh Dem Watermelons and The Great Blondino, Nelson has worked in collaboration with William Wiley, Bruce Nauman, Steve Reich and others.
These captivating and enigmatic photographs of the rural and forested landscape in and around Laytonville in northern California are a rarity not just because they have never been seen but also because they were shot on 35mm film and all special effects were done in the camera via multiple exposures. Nelson use no digital manipulation (including Photoshop) to create these mysterious and almost psychedelic images.
In addition to the incredible photographs on view, there is a special treat in store for those who attend the opening reception on Friday night. Robert Nelson is currently working on a new film (his first in 11 years) and he will be showing a 10 minute preview of original footage from this new movie. This will be shown only once at 9:30 pm.
This exhibition will run from June 6 – July 18.
