Book Launch

Saturday, May 10, 2008, 5:00 – 7:00 PM

Printed Matter, Inc. is pleased to announce a launch for Enclosure Exposure: Data Protection Patterning by Elizabeth Duffy. This is the latest publication by Purgatory Pie Press, a New York based press devoted to letterpress and handmade publications. The launch will take place on Saturday, May 10, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. Printed Matter is located at 195 Tenth Avenue (between 21st and 22nd Street) in New York City.

Purgatory Pie Press and the artist Elizabeth Duffy have collaborated on Enclosure Exposure a book that utilizes as source material everyday ephemeral patterns, specifically the interior security patterns of envelopes and the visual language of analog mail. The result is a page-turner of overlapping patterns and forms. Purgatory and Duffy culled patterns from their junk mail to create this paean to the quotidian.

Enclosure Exposure is the third installment of Purgatory Pie Press’s “InstaBook” series, which is a subscription series featuring books that can be created from a single sheet of paper via 4 folds and a slit. People who attend the launch can learn to make this quick, simple book.

Elizabeth Duffy is an artist who uses everyday materials to explore themes of transience and transformation, utilizing techniques that are repetitive and labor-intensive. Her work has been exhibited widely in such places as the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, The Islip Art Museum, Wave Hill, White Columns, and Holland Tunnel Gallery in New York, at Raw and Co. Gallery in Cleveland and Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. She has won awards including the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Pollock Krasner Foundation, and fellowships from the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo. Her work is in the collections of Deutsche Bank, The Heard Museum, the Williamsburg Art and Historical Center and Dartmouth College, and in numerous private collections.

Pugatory Pie Press was founded by Dikko Faust and Esther K. Smith. The press is known for its collaborative letterpress limited editions and artist books. They have had exhibits in the rare book libraries at the Metropolitan Museum and London's Victoria and Albert Museum. Their work is in the collections at MoMA, the Whitney, the National Gallery of Art, the Cooper Hewitt, the Tate, and many other international institutions. They currently have a traveling exhibit that has been at RISD, SVA's grad school gallery, Pyramid Atlantic in Washington DC, and MCC gallery in Flint Michigan. It runs May 15- June 15 at Minnesota Center for Book Arts (reception noon, Sunday May 18) and will be in Athens, NY June 22- late July. Esther K Smith is also the author of HOW TO MAKE BOOKS (Random House), which she and Faust designed (in collaboration with a computer based graphic designer), proofing the cover and display pages on the letterpress at the studio. Smith teaches Artist Books at Cooper Union; Faust teaches letterpress at SVA.

Enclosure Exposure: Data Protection Patterning is letterpress printed in an edition of 200. The publication retails for $65, and can be purchased at Printed Matter’s storefront, or online at www.printedmatter.org.
