Camilo Cruz: a bureaucracy artist

“My images seek to reveal the impressions made by institutions on our individual and shared humanity. By creating imagery of the impact of institutional presence on to our ‘being,’ my work exposes the inequity that continues to exist in our system of justice, while raising consciousness of the vulnerability we have to the institutional forces that govern our lives.” -Camilo Cruz.
Camilo Cruz is known as the “bureaucracy artist” because of his double life as an artist and as a Los Angeles Superior Court administrator. Through his on-site images, he explores the imperfection of human presence in the administration of idealistic notions such as justice. His images seek to recall the inherent marginalization ingrained within both society at large as well as specific, disjointed communities. Along with his photographs, Camilo has created an installation piece that continues this trajectory of social questioning. This installation invites viewers to question their own preconceived borders of equalitarianism, provinciality and relevance.
Camilo has a M.A. in Public Policy from Claremont Graduate University and is currently completing his M.F.A. at California State University at Long Beach. In 2007, he was awarded the bronze award in the Digital Conceptualization category by Black & White Magazine and was first place in the All Media 2007 Juried Exhibition at the Irvine Fine Arts Center. Most recently Camilo was selected as an ArtSeen 3 “2008 Emerging Artist” by the AIDS Research Alliance’s jury, which includes curators and directors from LACMA, The Huntington, MOCA and The Getty Museum.
