NYC Metro Area - "City of Water" Screening (09/26/07 - 11/16/07)
The Municipal Art Society of New York and the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance will present a series of free public screenings of their new documentary, City of Water, throughout the five boroughs between September 19, 2007 and November 16, 2007.
The film, which features interviews with Deputy Mayor Daniel L. Doctoroff, MacArthur Prize winner and founder of Sustainable South Bronx Majora Carter; author Philip Lopate, and Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, examines the future of New York’s waterfront in the context of development changes taking place along the Hudson River and East River.
City of Water explores the aspirations of public officials, advocates, environmentalists, recreational boaters and regular New Yorkers for a diverse, vibrant New York City waterfront. Two years in the making, the documentary includes scenes from the Navy Yard, Jamaica Bay, and the Queens and Bronx waterfronts.
“New Yorkers have been cut off from the water for so long we sometimes forget that we’re surrounded by it,” said Kent Barwick, president of the Municipal Art Society. “This documentary presents our city’s unrivaled waterfront and the opportunity we have to create something special. We are grateful to the organizations that are sponsoring these screenings, enabling us to bring this film to the public.”
Roland Lewis, president of the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance, added: “We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape the waterfront. This film highlights the “blue” movement to ensure we take full advantage of this opportunity so New York can take its rightful place among the world’s great waterfront cities.”
The public screenings will take place in venues in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx near areas that are most affected by the waterfront development plans. All the screenings are free.
