Swerve Festival Award Show.

I had the honor to serve on the inaugural Swerve Festival jury and at the taping of the awards ceremony tonight, emcee, artist, and skateboarder Chris Pastras mispronounced my name. I couldn't help but to yell out the correct pronunciation, at which point, karma king Earl Hickey ribbed Chris for not paying attention and saying my name right. I totally heart skateboarder, actor, and all around funny man, Jason Lee. He makes me laugh so hard every Thursday night, like an old friend.

The finalists were repped by a truly talented bunch of creatives. Congrats to all the winners and everyone nominated! The Award show will air on FUEL TV on November 9th as part of a one hour festival special so please remember to watch/record it!

Upper Playground in association with FIFTY24SF Gallery is pleased to announce Dialect of the Scribes, a new series of paintings from Los Angeles-based artist, Retna. Retna’s current work both on the street and in fine art mediums has branched into working with surfaces that include, billboards, bridges, buildings, trains, fashion, sets, and galleries. For this exhibit, Retna has created a series that
showcases his meticulous style of lettering and culture-based line work.

Drawn from his studio by the street life he saw through the window, Daniel Lehan has created a three-year series of 'street-level' artworks, with strong participatory and performative elements. On display in the gallery, the pieces exchange one type of interactivity for another, raising questions around the siting and contexts of artworks, the body and its absence, relational aesthetics, and the political economy of the artworld. As well as providing a retrospective of this strand of Lehan's practice, the show will contain a new 'sandwich board' piece created especially for the event. Visitors will be able to try on the ‘pret-a-porter’ works for a closer imaginative engagement with the physical, almost ‘endurance’ aspects of Lehan’s practice, as well as to appreciate its painterly and conceptual pleasures.

Please join us for a closing reception celebrating the exhibition Loaded Landscapes, as well as a panel discussion featuring exhibiting Midwest Photographer’s Project artists Anna Shteynsleyger, New Catalogue, and Alan Cohen. They will discuss the aesthetic, historical and philosophical issues related to photographing landscapes marked by human history and tragedy. This discussion will be moderated by Joel Snyder, professor of art history at the University of Chicago, coeditor of the journal Critical Inquiry and author of numerous essays on photographic theory and history.

Yang Fudong draws inspiration for his videos from the style and content of early-twentieth-century Chinese films. Director Mu Fei made Spring in a Small Town as China was recovering from the long war with Japan (WWII) and moving into its Communist revolution. Mu’s film aroused some condemnation because of its concern with the individual and the personal. The film revolves around an isolated family group, relics of the
class system, burdened by the past and trying to find their way into the future. The screening is introduced by ASU visiting professor Yu Zou, a specialist in Chinese film and civilization, who will address the history of the film’s reception in China and its relationship to Yang Fudong’s work.
