Please join us on May 31, 2007 from 7P-11P for cocktails to celebrate the new works by Terrell Moore. The show will remain on exhibit for one month.
Terrell Moore comes from the smallest town in Ohio you can think of, and his father was a preacher there. Passionate, rebellious choices and spiritual investigations inspired a series of moves through various urban centers of the American Southwest that resolved itself in Los Angeles, in 1991. Through all of it, Moore has been painting for as long as he can remember. Remaining primarily self-taught has allowed him to focus intently on his interior terrain, manifesting his style instinctively, and with infinite patience. Though both abstract and emotionally expressive, never call this work Abstract Expressionism. It has an agenda of clarity to its elusive narratives, and a distinctly literary dynamic in its serial proliferation, which place it outside the reach of AbEx nihilism.
The work of Terrell Moore can be explained as modern day totem poles, nature represented with industrial materials. This is a mix as profound and provocative as Moore’s juxtaposition of images. Images that are at once earthy and ethereal, iconographic and universal, and practical yet sacrosanct.
Moore’s process of creating, deconstructing and recreating is the cycle of nature portrayed in his work. The application of paint, layering it with paint thinner and water, spraying it and washing it off until the desired image appears. Often the image is a spiritual or cosmic symbol, planted or placed on a background of rich soil, clay, or sand. As the earth consists of layers so do Moore’s “paintings” and the close observer will detect text scribbled into the paint. Poetry and primitive forms become “fossilized” in the artistic process.
The results are works that can be interpreted by virtue of their construction and choice of materials as well as subject matter. Both solemn and solitude, a light within the darkness.
Every color series has a distinct emotional tone, as though each were a meditation on a single idea, pursed until all possible directions are explored, only to be followed by another. As these mediations give way to new ones, as life changes and doubles back on itself and leaps to change without warning, the spiritual foundation of Moore’s painting practice will never be exhausted. His approach and process are consistent while his content is always evolving; it’s always and never the same.
