Young Meagher at An Earnest Cut & Sew Gallery
The Meatpacking District, New York
Opening November 30th
An Earnest Cut & Sew Gallery announces the Young Meagher’s December Installation of Test Garments 2 (The Annual Test Garment Testament) and Davi Russo’s portrait series
Earnest Sewn is proud to announce that the first East Coast presentation of the Young Meagher Project is to occur at the An Earnest Cut & Sew Gallery in New York City’s Meat packing district. Young Meagher is a project inspired directly by the ethics of the militant rural tailoring tradition. A conceptual collaboration shedding light on the heretofore-lost history of a secret society called the Militant Guild of Rural Tailors, which was founded during the early Industrial Revolution. Even during its heyday details about the Guild had been shrouded in mystery but knowledge of its existence had all but completely disappeared over the decades since its formation. YM uses the dogmas of the secret society's 126 year-old manifesto as a guideline to develop a contemporary men’s clothing concept. In this regard Young Meagher is itself a research project with its documentation taking the form of prototype "test garments".
The Month long installation at An Earnest Cut & Sew marks the first exhibition of Test Garments 2, as well as Davi Russo’s portrait series. This presentation opens November 30th and will reportedly involve the conversion of the gallery into an inner-sanctum of the Militant Guild of Rural Tailors Guildsman’s Hall. Admission to the hall will be allowed only at the discretion of the high-cleric of the Guild’s NYC Chapter. Applications for MGRT New York chapter membership will also be accepted and reviewed during the exhibition.
Young Meagher worked with New York photographer Davi Russo to create portraits of modern day Militant Guildsmen. Depicting suspected guildsmen Quincy Bright, Rostarr, Carlos Quiarte and Niall Maher among others. Russo's portraits are inspired by turn-of-the-century daguerreotypes and were hand printed from paper negatives in a process not dissimilar from the rural tailoring they commemorate.
