Sampling Oakland
Some say Oakland today, is what San Francisco was in the 70s: a place where younger artists can afford to spread out, hang out, work hard, and create a thriving arts scene, one that's now garnering national attention. For years, Oakland has been sprouting performance spaces, galleries and collective live work/environments where musicians, writers, filmmakers and visual artists of every discipline influence each other's work. It's a vibrant artistic community fueled by vision and self-determination. YBCA brings a piece of the excitement surrounding the First Friday art crawl across the bridge with a life-amplified exhibition organized by a group of Oakland curators. Reflecting the collaborative spirit of artist-run venues such as Mama Buzz, Ego Park, Lobot Gallery, Oaklandish, 21 Grand and Black Dot Collective, YBCA presents a broad sampling of Oakland's best.
