Giant Robot is proud to present Three Way Tie for Last a group show featuring the art of Keith Jones, Jeffrey Brown, and UglyDolls at the Giant Robot Gallery in New York City.
Keith Jones can pack any surface with people, creatures, buildings, vehicles, devices, robots, aliens, and whatever else hits his stream of consciousness. As the viewer’s eyes follow the various paths of details,
it’s clear that the Montreal-based artist’s ultra meticulous drawing style cannot conceal the hyperactive the nature of his mind. Published works and contributions include his own Hello Car mini-comic and the Bacter-Area art book from Drawn & Quarterly.
Jeffrey Brown emerged on the comics scene in 2003 with his self-published Clumsy. Since then, he has amassed a large and loyal following of readers and fans. The Chicago-based writer was raised on Marvel Comics and received instruction at the Art Institute in Chicago, but his rough and honest storytelling is most closely akin to do-it-yourself zines and indie rock. Neither teen melodramas nor soap operas, Brown’s autobiographical tales brilliantly convey the awkwardness, hope, and bittersweet details of doomed romance In addition to writing and drawing his own books, Brown has contributed to Fantagraphics’ Mome anthologies, Drawn & Quarterly’s Showcase series, The Chicago Reader, NPR’s This American Life, and Death Cab for Cutie’s Directions DVD.
Uglydolls were birthed in 2001. David Horvath had doodled the creatures in letters he wrote to Sun-Min Kim, and she returned the favor by sending him a sewn one for Christmas. Since the handmade plushes were first sold in the Giant Robot store, the colorful critters have gained international distribution in toy stores, comic book stores, hipster boutiques, and Barneys New York. Having established Uglydolls as the clear leaders of the designer stuffed animal movement, the creative juggernaut of Horvath and Kim has branched off into vinyl toys and spin-off creatures. Expect to see one-of-a-kind dolls, prototype figures, and paintings and sketches.
A reception for the artists will be held from 6:30 - 10:00 on Saturday, July 22.
