This month Subject Matter Gallery is honored to present “La Batalla”, a group exhibit of work created by Hispanic artists “Retna” Marquis Lewis, Melissa Trochez, “Germs” Jaime Zacarias, Sonia Romero, Daniel Gonzalez, Johnny Quintana, Patrick Martinez, Antonio Pelayo, and Midzt. These Los Angeles-based artists have each crafted a definitive style of work while sharing an influence of heritage and present culture. The resulting work is refined with a mix of elements from street culture and an intellectual, timeless cultural vitality. “La Batalla” chooses to mix each artist together with his individual work in print, sculpture, murals, paintings, and drawings.
While creating pieces of art that reflect and document situations that are always present around them, these nine artists have been successful in merging time and color and presenting to their audiences. Pop-culture audiences, including musicians and actors, have appreciated the work of “Retna” Marquis Lewis. Sonia Romero has been successful in her printmaking and publishing an artist book. “Germs” Jaime Zacarias’ murals and paintings and Daniel Gonzalez’ letterpress, woodcut and linocut work may also be seen at Scion Space, LA this month. Illustration graduates from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena Patrick Martinez and Johnny Quintana have been successful with their art, Quintana having merged his innovations by opening a tattoo shop. Antonio Pelayo is established as a graphite artist who has chosen to embrace his cultures as a self-proclaimed “outside observer”, and Midzt has furthered his graffiti and muralist career by combining his style with glass sculpture. With “La Batalla”, Subject Matter Gallery has captured each vision filled with vibrancy, past, present, and future history.
