Giant Robot is proud to present “Mirror City” the art of Jack Long at GR2.
Jack Long studied illustration at RISD. Rejecting bright colors, silk-screens, and pop-culture references, Long’s fantastic oil paintings are filled with more subtle, serious, and dark content. Citing Northern Renaissance painters as influences, the Philadelphia native and Los Angeles resident depicts birds, boats, houses, trees, and wisps. Jack also takes cues from the mood and intensity of films by Ingmar Bergman and Frederico Fellini, compacted with the ever-developing, imaginative style of storytelling that evolved from his illustration background. As a result, Jack Long’s work unfolds a mystical, poetic, and suspenseful tale that captivates the viewer evoking the wonder of where this world stems. Each of these items has a voice, and together they narrate his life story. Or do they? More than 30 pieces will be prepared for Mirror City.
Giant Robot started from a black and white photocopied zine in 1994, evolving into a reputable, internationally distributed quarterly magazine and book publisher. Giant Robot Store opened its doors on Sawtelle Blvd. in West LA in 2001. In 2003, Giant Robot opened GR2, a hybrid store/gallery featuring emerging artists such as David Choe, Kozyndan, and Souther Salazar. Later that year GRSF opened in San Francisco's Upper Haight district, followed by a Giant Robot restaurant, gr/eats, to further the lifestyle experience. In 2005, a fourth store was opened in Los Angeles' popular Silverlake neighborhood, with a fifth installment in New York City's East Village.
A reception for the artist will be held from 6:30 - 10:00 on Saturday, June 17.
