Summer at sixspace is sizzling! Our last exhibition of the season features the premiere solo exhibition Kindertotenlieder by gallery artist Donovan Crosby with our project room showing Los Angeles-based
artist Matt Haber's Storm Withstanders. The reception for both shows is Saturday, July 1 from 6-9pm. Both artists will be in attendance and there is talk of some planned summer/bbq-style festivities too.
In her debut solo exhibition, Kindertotenlieder, California-based artist Donovan Crosby portrays Victorian-era children with flowers. Her new acrylic paintings (on canvas and panel) use the saccharine iconography of the 19th century to play on the irony, and oversimplification, of our idealized perception of children or flowers. Often perceived merely as "pretty little things," each can carry within a fundamental "darkness" and complexity that, while disturbing in some regards, is also an inherent human quality. The exhibition tile translates to "Songs on the Death of Children" and is taken from the early 1900s song cycle for voice and orchestra by Gustav Mahler.

The gallery project room features Storm Withstanders by Los Angeles artist Matt Haber presenting new acrylic on panel and paper works that explores the idea of occurrences and disasters, internal and external,
which navigate where his characters are going. Designed similar to a theatrical play, Storm Withstanders acts as a stage upon which his characters act out struggle and strife, enchantment and exploration and
the plight of the universe.
