drifters.

this past weekend was spent drifting. saturday by car, sunday by boat. and i'm kind of beat even though i didn't do much of anything but hang and watch. i blame the glorious southern california sun.

g4 videogame tv comped us tickets to attend the need for speed formula D (drift) finals in irwindale, california (thanks rob)! i didn't know what to expect but i somehow ended up shaking blown-up-bangers with my neighbors and yelling, "One more time! One more time!" and having super dumb fun! i can't remember the last time i hung out on metal bleachers and chomped on pretzels with nacho cheese, but i'm thinking maybe i should do it more often. i found it pretty damn easy to slip into motorsports. fast cars, fake boobies, i mean really, all that was missing was some cotton candy. although i bet that was actually available somewhere too.

Los Angeles -- George Billis Gallery, L.A. will showcase paintings by Carol Es beginning September 6, 2005; an opening reception will be held at the gallery on Saturday, September 10, from 5-8 p.m. George Billis Gallery, L.A. is located at 2716 South La Cienega Boulevard between Venice and Washington Boulevards, in the emerging Culver City arts district.

In addition to the paintings, Carol Es has created 1-SELF, a thirty-six page handmade catalog in an edition of fifty. The title suggests dual meaning of both intimate self-expression and the artist’s pattern making background in the garment industry, as patterns were often marked "1-self" for manufacturing.

‘Connecting Spaces’ is an exhibition of new work by the emerging multi-disciplinary artist Kezia Cantwell-Wright. The exhibition comprises photographs, drawings and interactive sculptures. The former explores the geometry and structure of modernist architecture, and the relationships between different elements, which acts as a metaphor for the relationships between sections of society. The drawings quote both architecture and puzzles, such as Rubik’s cube, in their exploration of geometry and spatial relationships, presenting the city as something that can be taken apart and put back together in another formation. Finally Kezia’s new sculptures, a hybrid between construction toys, such as Lego, and architectural models, allow viewers to explore the urban landscape for themselves by playing with the given forms and colours.

History

2005 marks the 27th year of the Chicago Jazz Festival. As of 1979 it looked like there was going to be three individual jazz festivals produced by three different organizations in Grant park each year and all three of them planned for the month of August.

Instead of having three different annual jazz festivals, the Mayor’s Office of Special Events helped join the three groups together to create the first Chicago Jazz Festival. The new festival showcased Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and also included several other performances presented by the the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

The festival is now the largest of its kind and public radio stations broadcast it around the United States each year. The Chicago Jazz Festival is a terrific way to spend your Labor Day weekend.

In a twist on one of New York City’s favorite summer traditions, the thriftshop theatre workshop, directed by Nina Pinchin, will perform abridged and condensed versions of Twelfth Night and Hamlet at the Tobacco Warehouse in Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park on Aug. 27, 28 and Sept. 3, 4. Twelfth Night will be performed in vaudevillian style, complete with magic tricks, music and puppetry, and Hamlet will be interpreted in the context of a New York prohibition era crime family using Kevin Connell’s new concise and accessible adaptation.

The Rockstar Games Upload 4 Contest welcomes filmmakers, writers and designers, both amateur and professional, to submit digitized projects and possibly walk away with some cash prizes. A panel of distinguished judges will evaluate each entry based on artistic merit, entertainment value and overall execution to determine grand jury winners and runners-up for all categories.

Entries can be any genre or subject matter and should be uploaded to the Rockstar Games Website via FTP client. The entry deadline is September 30, 2005. A winner will be announced in November or December.

One of Hitchcock's most famous films, NORTH BY NORTHWEST has everything--thrills, suspense, mystery, and black humor, as well as dark undertones of sexual exploitation and covert political machination. Roger Thornhill (Grant, in perennially spectacular form) is a successful advertising executive in New York City who is lunching with mother (Landis, the exact same age as Grant) at Plaza Hotel's Oak Room when he answers the wrong page, one for a George Kaplan, and is mistaken for Kaplan. It becomes an identity which Thornhill cannot shake and one that drags him across the country in the face of death with the pretty Eve Kendall (a rather wooden Saint) at his side. The great suspense director was at his most entertaining, creating a helter skelter action film where the hero is propelled from one breathless situation to the next. It is filled with classic scenes--the two most memorable being the crop-dusting sequence in which Thornhill is terrorized by an aerial menace, and the chase across the face of Mt. Rushmore. The title of the film paraphrases Hamlet: I am but mad north-northwest; when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw," an implication that neither Thornhill, Hitchcock, nor Hamlet is mad. Although NORTH BY NORTHWEST is available on videotape, no small screen viewing can match the Technicolor, VistaVision experience of seeing this one in the theater. With James Mason, a study in velvet villany, but looking dowdy for once, next to Grant, and Landau as a chillingly effeminate gunsel.
