we are officially in contract. after six weeks of prepping our home for sale, we sold it in two weeks. initially i was concerned with the timing of the sale of our home. would we get at least what our fourth floor neighbor wrangled (yes)? he sold at the height of the market this past spring. the sticker price shocked us all. we listed in the new fall season, meaning a move-in date in the dead of winter (closing in new york city takes about 10 - 12 weeks). families were already sorted for the fall school year. there were less home buyers in general.
fortunately for us, a bidding war ensued. we secured over $1000 per square foot. i know, rigoddamndiculous! welcome to manhattan. two very poor kids with very wealthy parents coughed up the offers. lesson learned: you can't buy in new york city unless you're extremely frugal or have rich parents. it's just how it is. so if you want to be a homeowner, live anywhere but here.
we're scheduled to move the first week in december. there's lots to do between now and then. we've already packed 38 boxes. we estimate another 20 to go. furniture wise, we are light (thanks to the mid century modern/minimalist aesthetic). two cabinets, six chairs, one bed, two tables, one coffee table and one industrial lamp are going west with us. two large art pieces need crates. the couch we bought will end up on craigslist. i've asked friends who've done the move east-west and vice versa for moving company information. if you have moved cross country and you liked your movers, please forward me the information. referrals are the only way to go on this. and thanks in advance!
landing is going to be okay. we secured a rental in our ocean park complex. so for three months we'll live in the temporary digs until we can move back into our old home. i can't wait to be five minutes door to sand again. i can't wait to go up and down stairs daily in my own home! my neighbor stuart is going to teach me the art of tea ceremonies. my family wants to arrange for many gatherings. friends want me to catch some waves with them. i'm actually looking forward to car shopping and starting a new gig. but mostly, i'm happy we have received so many welcome back emails. our friends rock. and it doesn't hurt that some good buddies have moved to LA too. i can count at least three more pending moves to socal. it's going to be tits when everyone's in town. for real.
new yorkers, come out to plaaaay. we're on countdown now. holler at your girl.
