Take a ragtag group of 17 high school girls (and one boy), and throw them reluctantly into summer school in a sleepy Northern Japanese town. Next, throw a bunch of big band jazz instruments into the mix, put it all into the capable hands of acclaimed director Shinobu Yaguchi (Also known for Waterboys), and you’ve got Swing Girls. After the oddball story of a high school synchronized swimming team, Yaguchi brings this hilarious new tale of teamwork and triumph head to head with a rocking swing jazz soundtrack!
Featuring some of the most famous jazz and swing hits from all the way back to the 1930’s, this film is guaranteed to touch anyone with a soft spot for comedy, stories about high school antics, or some of the most beautiful and dancefloor rocking music of all time!
What makes this already unique film even more so, is that the production mirrors the experiences that the characters go through every step of the way. With Yaguchi hiring all new young actors, he led them through a grueling process where they honed both their acting and musical chops from scratch, having done neither in their entire lives! In the end, this talented group goes on to big success both in and out of the story, as a dazzling ensemble that played all their own instruments for all the performances in the film!
Not content to end their experience with the film, already a runaway success back in Japan, all 17 bright and talented girls are coming to New York for a special appearance! After taking their jazz vibes on the road in Japan, they are set to hit the outdoor bandshell area of Central park for a video shooting from 12pm to 2pm. Then, for all you night owls, there is a special screening of Swing Girls at the Tribeca Grand Hotel in downtown NYC, followed by an intimate encore performance by the girls at midnight, with a complimentary drink for all attending!
