Beautiful Losers Part 1

We are pleased to announce that the opening of Beautiful Losers in San Francisco on 7/16 shattered attendance records for an opening at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Thanks to everyone who came out in support of the project, and apologies for those who were turned away at the door due to overcapacity.

The following evening, Part 1 of the Beautiful Losers Portfolio was exhibited at the agnes b. boutique. The Portfolio is a series of limited edition silkscreen prints by the Beautiful Losers artists. Each print measures 16x20", is signed by the artist and numbered in an edition of 200 each. There will be a series of openings at various locations [Deitch Projects in NYC, Roberts & Tilton in LA, Circle Culture in Berlin, and Art Basel Miami] featuring prints by more Beautiful Losers artists beginning in September 2004 until Beautiful Losers opens at the Orange County Museum of Art in February 2005. At that time, the complete portfolio will be on display and available.

Please be aware that Part 1 of the Beautiful Losers Portfolio is available exclusively at agnes b. in San Francisco through the month of August. The prints are also available online at www.agnesb.net. Part 1 includes prints by Ari Marcopoulos, Chris Johanson, Glen E. BROOKLYN, USA - Stay Gold Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn is pleased to present a politically charged and eye-popping collection of handmade peace/anti-war/anti-occupation posters as preparations and anticipation for the Republican National Convention reach their peak.

Designed to spread the message of non-violence and showcase the beauty of hand-crafted printing, the exhibit features new works by an international artist roster. The show includes artists well known for their political works such as Robbie Conal, Eric Drooker, Winston Smith, Seth Tobocman, and Edward Colver, and others from a graffiti/street-art background such as Shepard Fairey, Futura, Mear One, B-Stormers, Man One, Freddi C and Buff Monster. The show will also feature works by well-known silkscreen printer/designers Chuck Sperry & Ron Donovan/ Firehouse, Serigraphie Populaire, Lucky Bunny, Malleus, Jared Connor/Mexican Chocolate Design, EMEK and Gary Houston/Voodoo Catbox plus many more.

Curated by graphic artist John Carr (whose political poster art has been featured on the covers of magazines such as The Nation, Italy's Internazionale, and Seattle Weekly), the show was originally sponsored by and exhibited at Tokyo's renowned CWC gallery and consisted of 14 posters. The show expanded greatly as it moved to new venues such as Transport Gallery/Los Angeles & Punch Gallery/San Francisco. The exhibit received a feature review by the LA Times and was viewed by over 1,200 people. The exhibit arrives in New York after just having been exhibited at Zeitgeist Gallery in Cambridge, MA during the Democratic National Convention.

since when is having patience for catching the perfect wave a waste of time? we all know that everyone's gung ho about surfing these days, but intel's decision to ride the gravy train is rigoddamndiculous. who actually conceptualized this boardputer and thought, yes, what a great idea?! doesn't intel realize that one of the reasons people pick up the sport of surfing is to be one with nature? to escape our gadgets? are extreme waterproof cell phones on the way? surely you think surfers want to call another brah to tell them they're riding a spectacular tube? this definitely goes in the are-you-fucking-nuts category.

four x four gallery and Otto Design Group continues its focus on the real-life art forms of design and urban culture with the solo exhibition NOW & NEVE® featuring new paintings by artist Kostas Seremetis.

BACKGROUND
Kostas Seremetis was born in 1972. He started his career painting walls in Boston night clubs after high school, and by the age of 19, had his first exhibition. Since then, Kostas has developed an international underground following.

He has exhibited work all over the world: at the Parco Museum in Tokyo, Deitch Projects in New York, Made Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver, Colette in Paris and the Hyteck Convention Center in Hong Kong, to name a few. His work is sought out by private and corporate collections such as Nike and Berlin Movement.

In addition to painting, Kostas creates abstract short films. His films have been exhibited in the Laforett Museum in Tokyo and The Bonn International film festival in Berlin.

He has also collaborated on projects with bands, including The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, 20 Miles, DJ IZU and The Cult, and in the commercial world with corporations like Levis, Puma, Medicom Toys and NGAP.

Kostas's work has been featured in a number of magazines, including Tokion, Rolling Stone, Relax, Spectacle, Dazed and Confused and XLR8R. In 2002, he published his first book, Superhero & Six, and is currently working on a second, called The Seven Devils.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
NOW & NEVE® I once heard a story about a shaman, who went to the forest to die and to return to life enlightened. The forest is where he would find his power, strength and wisdom. The studio is my forest, my temple, my church - it's where I create and recreate. I've gone beyond Lex Luther and the Man of Steel, and entered a new stage in my life, with new vision and a wider spectrum, no longer limiting myself to proven formulas and hipster references. Now I am battling with contrasts and the unexpected: bullets & brushstrokes, abstract & structure, spartans & nomads, life & death, anarchy & peace, black & white, lovers & haters, reality & myths, coffee & cigarettes, science & fiction, NOW & NEVE®.

Kostas Seremetis lives in Brooklyn, New York, where he maintains a private studio and works as a full-time artist.

Eyebeam celebrates its seventh annual Digital Day Camp next week, featuring projects and proposals pertaining to urban design and renewal, an especially apropos topic in New York City right now. The culmination of an intensive month-long digital arts education program for local high school students sponsored by Eyebeam's Education Studio, the public festivities will begin with student presentations of their work, which employ both traditional architectural concepts and game theory to approach redeveloping the High Line, the heavily contested abandoned rail structure that runs through the West Side of Manhattan. Following the DDC presentations and exhibition opening, Eyebeam hosts Gamers Nite Groove, a four-hour collision of gaming and music hosted by New York-Tokyo. The evening is free, but donations are encouraged.

i just got back from a weekend holiday in boston. we were visiting my dad's side of the family. my father comes from a fairly large clan. dad ranks high in the upper middle half of 12 children by three wives. he is the only surviving child from the second wife. his two siblings died young -- one due to an ailment and the other in childbirth with my grandmother. due to the three different wives, this side of the family tree is fairly confusing. my grandfather was born in 1888 and outlived all of his wives and several children. he came from china to vietnam and was the first civilian mandarin to the emperor. he was also the governor of a large province in central viet nam. today, his progeny are scattered across asia, america and europe. my dad's oldest surviving brother is 93 years young. he is amazingly strong. he has big long ears and rosy cheeks. he laughs a lot. he looks caucasian mixed with pale skin and a high-bridged nose. he can still read and write in both vietnamese and french! his hearing's failing so he talks, well, just as loud as any of my fine-hearing relatives. he rolls around the house with his walker in his pajamas clearing a path for himself wherever he goes, easily outpacing my dad who is 73.

multi-tasking or zero attention span? i can't seem to have only one browser opened at once. meaning, i have to have no less than three or four websites open at the same time so that i can click on them, on demand. one for gmail or yahoo mail. one for kinja. one for ebay. one for my financial institution. one for research. this combination happens a dozen times a day. all day. non-stop. hundreds of other combinations occur before night falls. i average an extra opened window per hour from links friends send through instant messaging. what's up with that?

so i tried. just for a minute. i opened one browser to game girl advance and i felt fidgety. i stared at the bottom of my screen and my web window looked lonely neighboring only my outlook inbox icon. i couldn't just read gga's latest blog entry. so i opened another browser. awesome. i feel better, i can read up on what britney-expert-by-default, scott stereogum has to say about celebrity culture. and i can bounce back between the two, skimming headlines to see what i've been missing. what's the matter with me? am i only capable of ritalin reading?!
