we hosted a texas hold 'em poker tournament at our studio last night. fourteen friends turned up, splitting into two teams of seven, the night started slow and strong. jeff, new to poker, fought a good battle. sona duked it out as the lone girl at a table full of jokers. after a couple of hours of mandatory trash talking and jedi mind tricks, we combined the remaining three gamblers of both tables to start final eliminations. the more beer consumed, the more harsh the smack talk. marz kept us rolling with laughter with his drunken dealing and savvy bartending skills.
silvio ousted todd on the most incredible hand of the night. two 5s, one ace, one jack and one 3 laid on the table. todd went all in knowing that he had pocket aces and a full house. what he didn't realize was that silvio had a pair of 5s in his hand, throwing down, the best hand a player can be dealt ever; four of a kind! defeated but not destroyed, todd finished the night as resident dj. early in the night, silvio was sharp as a ginzu knife killing four opponents on his team fairly quickly.
silvio, omar, danny, steve, david l. and i made it into the final round. david l. should've gotten bonus chips for wearing a tuxedo! i love poker for the endless opportunities. a massive chip lead can disappear in three hands. someone limping in at every round can win a gold mine. that's what i did. it must've been because of my decoder glasses. after four hours and too much to drink, danny and omar stood as the most skillful and lucky players of the night. instead of playing for another two hours, they decided to split the pot, walking away with $70 a piece and a ticket to tonight's chappelle's show taping.
we scored four tickets to attend the taping of dave chappelle's last episode of this season, courtesy of our neighbor and friend, samantha. the poker money was cool but the chappelle tickets were bonus! trekking uptown to spanish harlem, we started the guest list process. it was quite a check in, as we were passed back and forth from one handler to the next. the attendant walking us to the main building said, "there are VIPs and then there are super VIPs. you are super VIP." which meant we were allowed to wait in a room with other VIPs and eat free candy, drink free drinks and be comfortable. before the load in, one of the handlers asked for someone with my last name and i raised my hand. she moved our party to the front of the line and allowed us to ride the elevator down to the show floor while everybody else had to, gasp, walk downstairs! samantha quickly greeted us and placed us in the third row. not bad. the stage was small and so when dave came out, it was as though he was performing in our living room.
dave chappelle is a riot. for two hours we watched some new clips for the show followed by impromptu stand up comedy. i've heard some of his jokes before. they're still funny every time he delivers them. dave looks like he's totally high as a kite, but he says he's quit smoking weed. i'm not so sure. i don't think he and his writing partner, neal brennan could possibly think up the sketches they create, sober! they're all ridiculous highdeas. but they parlay to live action skits pretty damn well. but you guys already know that. and if you don't, i highly recommend tuning into comedy central. some of tv's greatest programming is coming out of this little network. when the taping was done, i walked away from the night with a sore stomach and the phrase, "mud butt" permanently locked into my lexicon.
looking forward to the next poker tournament. but now i've got to dig up another good prize. the pressure.
