the last 24 hours has been non stop gaming action. old and new. evan's in town. being the civilized folks that we are, we invited him over for dinner last night. when i asked what he could not eat he informed me of his sensitive stomach. after confirming this with david, our friend in common, i decided on an asian inspired grilled catfish, steamed artichokes with a french butter vinaigrette dip, garlic green peas, and some battered zucchini sticks topped with balsamic vinegar. evan tried to use chopsticks to eat his artichoke leaves. funny white boy. fingers man. it's all about grabbing and gnawing. a delish junior’s cheesecake finished us off.
after dinner we dropped by the tribeca grand hotel for new york - tokyo's gamers night groove. the usual suspects turned up: jonathan, eric, marz, danny, sona, jamal, eric k, sam, and omar. evan reintroduced me to raina. i met her about six months ago for eric's book launch when smartgirls jane and robin were last in town. after checking out the old school games and filling up on redbull i was able to strong-arm a handful of people over for an impromptu midnight game of poker.
"that little asian girl was cracking me up. she got the shit talkin' down for sure" - jon g / poker emcee
damn, yo. we met jon exiting the tribeca grand. he called me out within five minutes of our meeting. jon organizes a serious poker tournament on a regular basis in brooklyn. i'm looking forward to his next match. i'm wondering if i'm going to get my assed kick or kicked out. we shall wait and see...
we are totally loving poker. but i don't want to talk about it. i'm not ready to admit my addiction yet. playing the game is fun and all, but it's the socializing veiled by macho statements that i most enjoy. we tried to play for a full two minutes, smack talking only in french. surprisingly, everyone but one of the six could speak french. that’s some snooty booty poker playing. the milve and omar found themselves at a face off twice. the game finally ended at 3:30 am, all for $20.00. we were all fucked for today's work. fostering new and strengthening old friendships was well worth the loss of sleep.
the rest of this week is going to be gonzo. we say goodbye to my sister, hani tomorrow (she's leaving nyc), jee arrives and we’re going to check out danny and milind's band and say happy birthday to miguel on thursday, and to finish the week we’re going to turn up for the res 10 party on friday. until the weekend, i foresee no sleep.
