The Film Society of Lincoln Center and New Line Cinema in January will present a weekend-long event screening special extended editions of the first two films in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, plus the upcoming final chapter, "The Return of the King," introduced by the director and cast.
Running Jan. 10-11, event marks the first time all three films will be shown together with the director in attendance.
Jackson, who co-wrote, directed and produced the trilogy, will introduce the Saturday screenings with members of the cast and participate in a Q&A following the night's final screening of "The Return." On Sunday Film Society program director Richard Pena will host an extended conversation with Jackson, revisiting highlights of his career and exploring the "Rings" trilogy in depth.
"These epic films are intelligent and affecting works of art which have set a new standard of excellence," said Pena.
New Line will release "The Return of the King" Dec. 17. Cast includes Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Miranda Otto, John Rhys-Davies, Andy Serkis, Liv Tyler and Hugo Weaving.
All three films shown for the first time as as one event, with the director and cast in attendance!
On Saturday: Special extended editions of Fellowship and Two Towers, introduced by director Peter Jackson and cast members, followed by The Return of the King with a post-screening Q&A with Jackson and cast.
On Sunday: Conversation with Peter Jackson, revisiting the highlights of his career and exploring The Lord of The Rings Trilogy in depth.
