last saturday i went to the deitch projects in soho to check out friend, ryan mcginness's new artwork. after squeezing my way through what seemed like a couple of hundred people i found myself smack in the middle of a maze constructed with mirrored walls. the maze was set up so that you could walk through and look at ryan's art etched on the mirrors. while looking at the art on the mirrors, a few times, i got lost thinking i was looking at my reflection only to see another person looking back at me as they approached. being in a tiny room full of mirrors is disconcerting. nevertheless it was nice to get "lost" with so many people around.
at one point, i found myself talking to another artist friend, charlie in the smaller of the two showrooms. in the tight quarters someone asked, "what's that smell?" charlie said, "if it's mothballs, it's me," and chuckled. i said "no charlie, it's the hipster smell." he said, "what's that?" and i said, "it smells like unwashed salvation army clothes and intentionally unwashed hair." charlie agreed and we laughed.
i am lucky enough to own a piece of ryan's art and it's nice to see so many people come out to support him. that's the way it outta be.
